Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

They have started tweeting this afternoon about a relaunch on Monday morning at 8am. All their DJs have been silent on Twitter for the past 24 hours, with some Host bios have already been removed on the website.

Anyone have any additional information?

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

Not too long ago, there was an ad @ Dundas Subway station on the wall (massive huge!)
That only showed "93.5" and did not mention the word "Flow".

They've already shifted from being all urban hits to being a lot more of a classic throwback station.
I honestly do not know if new changes are coming, or just a new name (ie throwback 93.5) to better show the changes they've made in the past year or so. (at least...)

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

A mistake from the get-go and NOT at all what the people going for the initial license promised to all those who supported original bid and signed petitions and sent in letters of support.  A betrayal.  Dishonest and underachieving as a radio station from day one.  It is what it is.  A waste of air space and tainted with vibes of negativity.  Talk about a completely BLOWN opportunity.

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

Reading Flow's tweets, using very old school references, "it's real and it's spectacular", and "move'in on up", i'm thinking maybe a hint to a full-time  throwback station.

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

Newcap introduced 'The Mix' in Halifax.

[Via Metro]

Halifax is going to have a little more 90’s on its airwaves, as Radio 96.5 becomes Mix 96.5

In a release issued Thursday, the Newcap radio station said it is looking to appeal to young listeners who enjoy hearing a variety of music on the radio.

“There are plenty of disenfranchised listeners who deserve a radio station for them,” said Ken Geddes, general manager for Newcap Halifax, in a statement. “Mix 96.5 is that radio station.”
In 2013 the station made the switch from Kool 96.5, a 70’s and 80’s station, to Radio 965, a more modern station playing popular acts like Imagine Dragons and Matt Mays.
Mix, as it’s now called, will be playing music from the 90’s to modern day hits like Adele, Coldplay, Mumford & Sons and Ed Sheeran.

The station was to switch over to it’s new programming at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

Rule #1 of format changes: If the station is teasing it, and the staff are still there, It's a tweak, possibly accompanied by a re-brand.

In this case to "93.5 The Move" according to the domain snoopers.

Does anyone in Canada already hold the rights to the name "Movin"? It sounds a lot better than "The move", and...in the States, wasn't Movin' a throwback station??

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

Agree. "The Move" sounds awkward. And Movin' was generally rhythmic gold, not unlike what FLOW's doing now.

My guess: Research shows that there's a market for what they're doing now, but nobody knows they're doing it, since "FLOW" has been every flavour of urban since it signed on....so "The Move" is an attempt to re-launch pretty much what they're already doing.

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

In all fairness though, this will be Newcap's first shot at 'rebranding' or 'relaunching' or whatever.  It'll be interesting positioning, since I believe G98.7FM pretty much jumped in where Flow couldn't get to.

I think there's an opening for Newcap to capture and nurture an audience leading into the Boom demo though.  That would be smart positioning in this market.   Boom will have to shift things up a decade soon enough anyway.   So boom covering off the 80's through 00's and 'new thing' covering off 00's and 10's  through limited currents.

It's always a strange environment when you have a couple of stations chasing different specturm.  Much easier when all the departments can work toward a common, albeit wide, goal.

[dink] Maybe it's triple A [/dink]

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

I think FLOW's throwback model was smart, it even got CKIS to start playing throwbacks as well shortly after. The problem was they billed themselves as "all the best throwbacks" but a good chunk of the air time was playing current titles. They should've stuck with "the beat of Toronto" as their slogan.

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

[Via 1236]

Flow 93.5 purged its air staff ahead of a relaunch. The frequency that debuted on March 1, 2001 after a 15-year effort to get black musicians on Toronto radio—only to spend the next 15 years struggling to define itself among all the other radio stations playing black musicians by then—just handed out a bunch of pink slips. Flow is promising to reach an unspecified "next level" come Monday. (A station in Charlotte, North Carolina already beat them to the all-Drake music format.)

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

http://www.935themove.com/ "All The Best Throwbacks"

"Newcap Radio is proud to announce the launch of its newest radio station in Toronto, 93-5 The Move (CFXJ-FM).This is a significant evolution of the 93-5 frequency. Since launching 15 years ago, the “FLOW 93-5” brand has become synonymous with urban and rhythmic music in Toronto. Last year, the radio station began a migration to a more retro-music format, playing “throwbacks” from the 1990s and 2000s. The result was an immediate uptick in ratings. Listeners clearly embraced the new throwback strategy! However, the opportunity for growth was impeded by the 15 years of branding as “FLOW”. Research reveals that hundreds of thousands of listeners in the GTA love throwback music. In an effort to attract those listeners “93-5” needed a new brand name.Today (February 29th, 2016) we unveil that new name, look and feel as 93-5 The Move. This launch is supported by an extensive marketing campaign, a new website at www.935themove.com and mobile app.93-5 The Move plays throwbacks from the 90s to now. These are the great songs that became a soundtrack for a generation which they seldom get to hear on the radio. “That’s because all of Toronto’s radio stations are either playing new hit music, or playing songs from the 70s and 80s.There is not a single radio station playing the great songs from the 90s that our listeners grew up with… until now”, says Operations Manager Steve Parsons.93-5 The Move features artists like Destiny’s Child, No Doubt, Backstreet Boys, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Eminem, and Michael Jackson. While the major focus is the music from the 1990s and early 2000s, 93-5 The Move will continue to support new music and showcase incredible new talent."

Thanks for finding this. Seems like it is just a re-brand and an excuse to pink slip their staff as the format looks to be the same.

They didn't pink slip all the radio talent. At least 3 still remain.

Sorry I meant some of their staff. Having listened to the station since 8am, they have definitely broadened their throwback playlist that they didn't play before (Madonna, Pink, Ace of Base, etc). It seems like they are catering to an older audience and like someone mentioned previously, positioning the station to possibly transition boom 97.3 listeners to 93.5 if they want more "current" throwbacks. Of course they have their licence requirements, but I wonder if they'll request a change at the next licence renewal hearing.

It is a shame though their only running with 3 DJs and no morning show.

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

An oldies station for millennials only they're called "Throwbacks." I see. It's the equivalent of a station in 1976 playing '50s and '60s music only this time it's a station in 2016 playing '90s and '00s. It all makes sense, doesn't it?

Re: Changes at Flow 93.5 (CFXJ)?

Flow made the initial changes near the end of 2014 and saw an uptick in their ratings. Instead of carrying the momentum they decided to keep the playlist too tight and too repetitive, which saw the numbers either stay flat or drop a touch. They were still much higher than they were just less than 2 years ago based on the numeris stats. They did not know how to take a great idea to the next level, and that's why they made the changes. Another struggling station with a strong signal should pick up where Flow left off, and they will take younger listeners away from the Top 40 stations, guaranteed.

NewCap is now looking for a mid-day announcer for the station which was Miss Ange's old slot. I'm puzzled how a company can pull something like this off?

I believe the plan is to hire Tarzan Dan for mornings or afternoon drive on 93.5.

Anyone notice that Boom sounds a bit heavier than it did at least a year ago?
Maybe the plan is to stay pretty much the same (ie no currents on boom) but to keep adding more rock classics to Boom while Move 93.5 avoids rock...just a thought... (and indeed not a fact)

...to a point. When there's such a huge divide in two stations' stature, you do whatever's best for the big one, and adjust the smaller one accordingly.

Good lord. He'd be better on boom. He never played the "Move" music in Toronto in the first place....no real connection to the audience. Love him, but it this happens, it's the old-guy boardroom crew being completely out of ideas. So it might.

I agree. Heck even move Maie Pauts over to Move as at least some of the throwbacks were played during her time at CHUM.
