The Story Behind Buffalo's First & Long Forgotten Radio Station

It's the lost station that barely lasted a year. But it was the first radio outlet that put out a signal to Buffalo, way back in 1922.

Buffalo News: WWT, Buffalo’s first radio station in 1922

Re: The Story Behind Buffalo's First & Long Forgotten Radio Station

Toronto's first radio station was CFCA and was owned by the then Toronto Daily Star. Tests began in late 1921 with experimental station 9AH. As CFCA the station began regular broadcasting on March 28,1922.

CFCA Toronto survived until September 1st 1933 when Star owner Joseph E.Atkinson (holy Joe) was convinced that the government was going to buy all of the private radio stations in the country and form a monopoly. Didn't quite turn out that way.

The history of CFCA Toronto can be found at the History of Canadian Broadcasting Website, broadcasting-history.ca

I wonder if the Star wishes that they had stuck with radio. Overall the radio business in Canada seems to be quite a bit healthier than the print media. New stations are still coming on air but newspapers, especially weeklies are closing.
