Tweet Creates Controversy & Mystery At Legendary Radio Station

There is something very weird going on at one of the world’s most iconic radio stations. But so far, no one is talking about exactly what happened.

Many of us here are familiar with WWL New Orleans, the clear channel radio station at 870 on the AM dial that played a huge role in helping with the recovery after Hurricane Katrina. You can sometimes even get it in the GTA, when CJBC doesn’t get in the way.

A few days ago, in a mirror of a situation that happened on Toronto’s own Fan 590, one of the station’s sports commentators came out as gay. You can guess what happened – social media went crazy with both messages of support and outright hatred.

But one of them caught the attention of everyone. It used a slur commonly applied to gay men. Not unexpected, except for one thing – it was issued on WWL’s own Twitter feed. Which means it came from someone at the station!

So far, no one has been fired or named in relation to the incident and while the Tweet was quickly deleted, enough people grabbed a screenshot that it’s become a huge story. For those who have to face Twitter trolls on a daily basis, it’s often hard enough to ignore all the vile vitriol. But I can’t quite recall ever hearing about the abuse coming from somebody’s own radio station! And no, there's no indication the thing was hacked. It appears almost certain that someone from inside sent it.

What a strange story.

*shrug*
It'll pass. Look at Stafford.

It shouldn't pass...it needs to be dealt with openly

The world would be so good if it weren't for some people...

Motorcycle enthusiasts and anime image board posters often call each other that and it's kind of lost the impact. Blame 4chan, where all the kids (and many more adults than you think) went once "trust and safety" councils started springing up on social media.

But also square that with record amounts of GLB acceptance in youth.  (T, not so much.  Have a word with your Yanivs and SteffOnKnees about that one.)

As a followup:

What we are seeing (IMHO) is the result of two generations of children growing up without strong men.  I was lucky.  Today's young men aren't and seek out things like edgy fascism which usually is a phase (like with Bowie) and for those that it isn't, is a moneymaker for stupid followers (like Spencer or Duke).  Turns out racism really IS the result of fear and stupidity, and I suppose someone is going to make a quick buck.

Go home Oakley. You're out of your element again.

Re: Tweet Creates Controversy & Mystery At Legendary Radio Station

The guy in the middle of the story that started this thread has not only taken a leave of absence - he's now taken a polygraph test and is suing station owner Entercom. I get that he's mad at their apparent lack of action, but I can't help but wonder how much of a career limiting move this is.

Not only does he earn the enmity of management. whatever its flaws, but what other station would want to hire him? A very weird story that just got even more bizarre.

Re: Tweet Creates Controversy & Mystery At Legendary Radio Station

This story just gets sadder and weirder. The station is now accusing the gay sports guy who was the target of the Tweet  of posting it himself, in order to launch a lawsuit to get him out of his accumulating debts. It would explain why they've been so quiet about their investigation into what they think happened.

Another Jussie Smollett case in the making?
