Great Scot! Batra Outs Newsman Darrin Boland On 640

An amazing moment on 640 Wednesday night.

Right after the 9 PM news, guest host Adrienne Batra had that evening's newscaster Darrin Boland on using his real thick Scottish brogue - the one he rarely employs on air.

He explained why he changes his accent to make it easier for listeners to understand, so they won't think they're "listening to the BBC."

What a fun segment and I'm glad I heard it.

Nice to see Batra supplementing her income. I guess the Postmedia government bailout still doesn't make ends meet.

I had the pleasure of listening to it as well. Great interview. Accents are actually a lot of fun to examine and it's amazing how they can differ, even between close geographical areas like Toronto and Buffalo.

It's interesting how presenting the news in a thick Scottish brogue would be considered distracting whereas Maria Madden's Irish lilt (which was very heavy when I first heard her do the news on St. Paddy's Day of all days a few years ago) seems more "charming".
