Should CBC get out of selling advertising and focus on content?

In an interesting piece by former vice-chair of the CRTC, Peter Menzies suggests in article in the Chronicle Herald (Halifax) newspaper that the CBC should stop competing for ad revenue and supply content  and make their money by providing content and tapping into tax incentives and grants to do so.

To quote Peter Menzies;

"So get CBC out of the advertising business on all of its platforms. Make its content available to other media for free within Canada so they can reap some of the investment created by their tax dollars.That may do little to appease those who dislike CBC’s politics, but it will go a long way to helping ensure there’s room for other voices in the marketplace that don’t have to depend on the party in power for their existence."

He suggests that it is wise to open the door to private broadcasters to sell advertising and make money.

Here is the article...(link).

What do you think? Is this a good suggestion? Do you see it happening?

Comment away!
