Long time radio veteran Rick Gibbons cut by Rogers @ 1310 News Ottawa

Rogers is on a bit of a restructure in other markets too...1310 News cut long time radio veteran Rick Gibbons, he has covered some big news stories over the years and has had a solid career in the business, both in print and on air.

Also of note, today was the last day of Doc and Woody on Chez FM ...they have been the morning show duo for over 20 years...and now cue Biggs and Barr...

Here is the low down on another radio veteran getting cut...

I'm amazed that Rogers has kept 1310 News on air as long as they have. In the spring, they came in at #22 25-54 with a 0.9 share.

It's never caught on there...launched too late in a market that was just fine with CBC and CFRA.

Ratings are low because they are exactly that! Another CFRA, instead of running a proper news wheel 24/7.
Yes, that does cost more to run, but not as much as it might seem.
Much of the content can easily come from Toronto's 680 news, including the business news, entertainment updates, etc.
If it's already there, it's not an added body or some other added expense.

Once people realize that there is a proper news wheel in place, the station will have better credibility as a reliable news source and ratings will pick up.

Exactly.  When I'm in town I tune in and hear talk or sports talk and I'm out, every time.  I listen to 680 very often because I can rely on it.

I completely agree. A Newsheel format only works if you stick to it as 24/7 as possible.

1310 just launched too late, on an AM frequency most had forgotten about. They *did* go 24/7 at first, but with no ratings, it quickly became a money-pit.

No, they didn't. They went Baseball talk and Jays games first, news wheel second.
They never really took the news wheel seriously.
They did nothing to promote it.
If people still think it's an oldies station or a source for Jays games they sure are not going to go there for news.

1310 has been a loser since the mid-'60s.  At one point, (the early 1980s) they stole people from CFRA and still didn't do anything.  When they run baseball games on Sunday night, they have problems and then excuses why things sent wrong.  They do very little promotion, and the 1310 signal is terrible.  Perhaps they should switch to the vacant 540!!!
BTW, this move redoes something they changed shortly after they went to an all-news wheel.

You're right, Ale Ont: they just can't seem to win. They tend to be their own worst enemy with their questionable programming decisions ("Sunny 1310," anyone?) but as you imply the main villain is the signal. It's just brutal. A shame really, since if you're a news junky their newsroom is Far, FAR, F.A.R. superior than the children playing Radio down the dial.
