The CRTC put out a dizzying array of stats for 2018 on Thursday, showing a plethora of facts and figures ranging from revenues, expenses and profitability for TV and radio stations across Canada. Most were also divided into markets, including Toronto.
They also released a look at how the industry is doing as a whole, and surprise, surprise! Conventional radio and TV stations have seen revenues fall – all except for – you guessed it, CBC Television, which increased profits by 12.6% from last year.
The report, available here, suggests it has more to do with the commercial money made from the Olympics than anything else, but that still speaks volumes when you consider taxpayers – some of whom work at private TV and radio stations – are forking over some of their hard earned dough (outlined below) to help them pay for those rights.
Here’s a look at how everyone is doing, by average. Salaries exclude benefits, although they’re there if you’re curious.
Conventional TV Stations
Private Stations, Ontario:
Staffing: 1,568, down nearly 500 since 2014
Avg. Salaries: $87,994, up just over 3-grand from 2014.
CBC Ontario
Staffing: 1,511, down from 2014
Avg. Salaries: $108,965, up about $6,000 from 2014
CBC Natl.
Staffing: 3,723.8, down since 2014
Avg. Salaries: $106,524, up more than 7-grand from 2014
Canadian Radio
