Anyone watching CityNews at 6 Sunday night might have been surprised when a tornado warning took over the screen in the same manner as Amber Alerts do. It was an Environment Canada prediction that wicked winds could hit Prescott-Russell in Eastern Ontario.
What's odd about this is while it was going on, I switched to CFTO and Global - and neither had it. Why was City the only one to have their signal interrupted and why was a tornado warning far away from Toronto aired here?
I'm not one of those people who goes crazy when one of these takes over programming, but it was certainly odd that it concerned a warning from such a distance - and only aired here in one place.

Did you check CBC? One would expect that the station with tax dollars backing it would have the extra revenue to be the most informative...

i could be mistaken but i think city ottawa is a repeater of the toronto feed. if true the originating station is required to carry the alert. ctv global and cbc have originating stations in ott... thus warnings would not be seen in toronna.
on another note i have an ott cell number but i am currently deep in upper canada. i did not get the text alert. apparently my family is safe.

What City TV Ottawa?
The new RO Ottawa (later A channel Ottawa) and City TV Toronto were the same company when Chum group was around, but CTV bought A channel Ottawa and converted it to CTV 2...

What City TV Ottawa?
City TV has a transmitter in Ottawa, and since it's just a 100% repeater of the Toronto station, the only way to get the warning on its Ottawa signal may have been for the Toronto station to run it.

CITY also has a re broad in Woodstock, Ontario... so by extension of the above, the alert would also have been on the Woodstock transmitter ???

I would assume so.

The alerts are based on where you are at the time, not where your number is based. I'm actually somewhat impressed by that.

it seems that even some people in orleans did not get the alert either. curious how pelmorex draws the map of who should and should not get a notice.

I don't think it's about the map, but rather the alert system not being able to accommodate every phone model/provider combination.

Given all the complaints and glitches this system has had, it's nice to know we're not alone. Check out what happened by accident Monday night in Washington, D.C.
