This is admittedly a lot of speculation but with the Leafs having aired on 680 News earlier this month because of The Fan’s contractual obligations to the Jays, I was wondering about a “what if” scenario.
 
On Saturday, the Jays home game vs. the A’s began at the unusual time of 3 PM, with the station trumpeting its Raptors playoff broadcast at 7 o’clock that evening. As it turns out, the Jays won 7-1. But what would they have done if the game went into extended extra innings and it had gone well past the 7 o’clock Raptors tip-off?
 
They would certainly have had to continue with the Jays coverage, but where would the Raptors have gone? Could they have delayed the game (doubtful, because it was an NBA playoff contest also being carried by multiple Canadian and American TV networks) or would they have been forced to shunt it off to 680 News (which would have been without much warning, leaving non-Jays listeners unsure where it was on the dial.)
 
And presuming the Fan had already arranged its schedule for the day, what would 590 have done after the Jays game finally ended, say around 8:30 PM? They wouldn’t have anyone scheduled to come in, since the Raptors were supposed to have been there and it's unlikely they would have joined it in progress, leaving it on two Rogers stations at the same time.
 
It’s all moot speculation, of course, but given one station has so many sports properties that often overlap, I’m surprised they don’t find themselves in a mess like this more often. They're just fortunate that Saturday wasn't one of them.
