Netflix Vows To Stop Cdns. From Watching U.S. Version Via VPNs
Netflix vice-president claims they've got new technology that will prevent anyone from using a virtual private network to access the fuller U.S. version of the streaming service from Canada. And he vows it will be rolled out in the next few weeks.
Just curious - how many here would cancel their subscriptions if this fix really works? And how long will it take before the VPNs of the world find a workaround?

They're not the only ones on the warpath.
It doesn't seem to have received much fanfare but on January the first, Major League Baseball took over the digital media department at the National Hockey League. The full affect of this brand new 6 year partnership is expected to be seen (and felt) by the end of this month. Many (maybe even present company) who currently are watching N.H.L. games on streaming services based out of Europe anticipate some scrambled hockey signals in the very near future.

They can try but this is the Internet and people always find a way around. For each wall they try and build people will find two ways around.

I can't help thinking they're deliberately confusing the issue. The current geo blocking is done via DNS and is completely straight forward to bypass. A plugin for chrome takes care of that. The DNS server decides where your query for the netflix servers is coming from and directs you to the appropriate server farm. VPN on the other hand presents your IP Address as being physically located in that country or region.
The DNS thing would be a fairly straight forward fix for Netflix to address, in the scheme of things, and I believe they will. The VPN issue is a completely different kettle of fish. But I'd also guess that a very very small percentage of people are using the VPN for that purpose. If you're that savvy, you probably downloaded the damn movie or tv series the night before anyway, and rely on your VPN more for torrents than you do streaming Netflix content.

Ps. i've never had a kettle of fish. So the comment may or may not merit that on second thought.

This is going nowhere. Statements to appease regulators. The VPN's and DNS changers have far too much to lose, hell my PS3 thinks it's in 4 different countries.

Back to this topic for at least one movie, anyway.
Those in Canada who insist on having the American Netflix in their home are losing out on Starwars, unless (most respectfully) they also choose to have "Starz (USA)" ordered for their home as well.

u.s. netflix appears to have a wider selection of tv shows (than its northern counterpart) while canadian netflix seems to have a better movie selection (than netflix south of the border). there was a time when i had access to both versions, so i speak from experience.
