Can 1 ownership group merge 2 stations into 1 and win? (in 1 market)

This is what is happening in New York, where Media giant  Entercom owns two big AM radio stations that compete against each other... 1010 WINS and 880 WCBS...

There is talk and fear now that with one company owning the 2 radio properties, that they will merge sooner than later.

The thinking is this just won't work, the 2 are very different culturally.

My question of you is ...do you feel it can work, say for example CFRB and 640 Global Toronto merged...do you feel this idea (that does cut costs) would work or do you leave them be and continue to carve out the niche they are working in and broadcasting in?

Here is more foreground on this story...

Have a good week ahead!

The world would be so good if it weren't for some people...

WINS and WCBS have been sister stations for 24 years now, so this isn't really a new possibility, though this is the biggest push yet to share resources.

They won't fully merge anytime soon though, as they are both individually quite profitable, and nothing you could put on the freed up frequency would make up the lost revenue

But it was not an actual merger, since CKEY was shut down.

Not entirely true. A shut down would mean that 1430 went dark as Fan moved to 590.

CKEY was actually CKYC 590, and not shut down. The country music moved to 1430 through Pelmorex or whatever source at the time. 1430 was then sold to Fairchild and the Country music was switched over to multicultural programming under the new ownership.
