Not sure how many SOWNY visitors have ever heard of John Batchelor, but he’s been on WABC-AM (and is now syndicated to other stations) every night since Sept. 12, 2001 – the day after the 9/11 attacks.
He leans right, but he’s one of the few who’s reasonable, willing to entertain other points of view and his guests are generally excellent and very knowledgeable about world events. I hadn’t heard his show in a long while and when I turned it on a few weeks ago, I was surprised to hear him sounding almost drunk on air. He clearly was slurring his words and I had no idea why.
Until now.
It turns out he’s been battling a form of tongue cancer and despite the extreme impediment that presents to someone who makes his living by talking, he became determined to stay on the air – which, despite radiation treatments and worse, he’s done.
It’s an amazing story of determination and willpower and I must say I have new respect for the guy.

I remember Batchelor and Alexander. In the early 00s it was a strange sort of far-right Art Bell riff spliced with Theatre of the Mind. Paul Alexander soon split, and John Batchelor re-branded as a 'moderate' when the Iraq War soured.

I never heard him until this week when I was doing my AM radio DX'ing and some of his program was non blood pressure inducing but pretense at moderation ended yesterday when he interviewed Devin Nunes. All right wing talking points.
