The CRTC released a huge document Wednesday outlining the state of broadcasting in 2017, the most recent year for which they’ve been able to assemble all the stats. There is a ton of material, broken down into TV, radio, streaming and other forms of media, all detailing advertising, formats, money given to CanCon, overall profitability and more.
It would be almost impossible to digest it all here, but you can see the extensive data at this link.
If I could pick just one of many things that might be the most interesting to me, it could be the chart below – the list of radio formats that were the most successful that year. It shows:
“The top 3 formats in the English-language market garnered approximately 44% of the tuning share, with talk radio (CBC Radio One) and news/talk formats leading with 22%, followed by the Country and Top 40 formats, each garnering approximately 11% of the tuning share.”
It should be noted that the 22% includes the CBC and regular talk stations combined. But I have to say given the prominence of music on FM, it seems a bit surprising that it would be talk radio that is listed as having the most hours tuned.
Modern/Alternative Rock 3%
Classic Rock 3%
AOR/Mainstream Rock 6%
Hot Adult Contemporary 8%
News/Talk 9%
Classic Hits 10%
Adult Contemporary 10%
Mainstream Top 40/CHR 11%
Today’s Country 11%
CBC Radio One 13%
