Pontification on Podcasting-aka "who the heck is listening"?

Here are some stats on who is listening to podcasts and what some of the trends are in this ever growing medium...

It furthers the notion that "Narrowcasting" is here to stay and will probably be the norm...

If you read the book the Long Tail, the author talks about the pie is still there, but the slices of the media pie are getting sliced thinner and thinner...with more choice, more content, more places to turn and tune in or to read in!

Here are the Podcast stats and trends...

Re: Pontification on Podcasting-aka "who the heck is listening"?

Of the 2330 people surveyed 24% said they have accessed a podcast...7% of that do it daily, 8% weekly...73% have never or rarely access a podcast and 3% used to listen but now no longer do...the numbers are slowly  trending upwards but clearly they still have a ways to go....from the folks I've spoken to that currently access podcasts...most are older white guys, or fan-geeks tuning into specialty stuff like comedy, right-wing politics, conspiracy stuff, UFOs/aliens, wrestling or MMA.

Re: Pontification on Podcasting-aka "who the heck is listening"?

Some of my favorites are the podcasts of radio shows, made available to listeners, usually thrown up on Twitter shortly after the show airs.

Locally here in Toronto, both TSN 1050 and Sportsnet 590 are way ahead of regular talk radio in this, and offer hour long segments of their morning and afternoon drive shows, plus individual interviews for quick consumption to their Twitter followers. Way more convenient, one stop listening.

Once the TSN 1050 recorded show ends, it seamlessly takes the listener to the live show currently airing, a sneaky clever way to build a show's popularity, while cross promoting other shows. Maybe Rogers does this as well?

It would be terrific if 'Moore In The Morning' on Newstalk 1010, and 'Stafford and Supriya' on GNR am640 had even a weekly best of podcast version of their shows. It can get a bit much switching back and forth constantly.

Alec Baldwin's podcast 'Here's The Thing' is always worth checking out.

Hockey podcasts are so numerous, it's overwhelming. Sportsnet's 'Hockey Central at Noon' stands out most days, depending on their rotating lineup, and how the Leafs are doing.

Spotify has just announced that they have purchased Gimlet Media, and Anchor (a do-it-yourself podcast company). Guess this whole podcasting thing's got some legs.
