My radio listeners will get an update tonight...

I'm known for doing the really unorthodox also the Really, REALLY Unorthodox!
So, tonight I am going to share the next adventure in my life which will shock you, I'm sure.
You're on the inside that I'm "up to something" which normally scares the hell out of management!
(NO! I am not going to resign.)

I LOVE "People Helping People" & it's a privilege to sit at that microphone each week!
(I should pay them, but lets not give BELLmedia another stream of income. OK?)

Listen & enjoy!

I'm having another adventure...Beginning tonight at 11:05 or so...

Re: My radio listeners will get an update tonight...

I may be the first person since Ray Sonin on "Calling All Britons!" to play music on NewsTalk1010 (Gary Slaight would have thrown a fit!), but I had to. To keep the station "legal" I had played Louden Wainwright III's "My Meds" and had to play a Cancon to stay within the regulations for "Canadian Content", so I told a true story and played a song I LOVE which always makes me cry.
It did. Listen for yourself at 1:13:18 on Soundcloud. Enjoy!

Re: My radio listeners will get an update tonight...

ok i'll bite....

i'll also cry shenanigans because any md/pd worth his mouse pad would have figured that out long before you were forced to play it.  and the only reason it would have to be "legal" is if the station was playing other non-cancon music first.

More to the point, according to my math, the program started thereabouts 11:05pm, and the musical selection did not occur for another one hour and thirteen minutes, making it after midnight....when cancon regs don't matter anyway.

Like I said in my earlier note: I did play another song first..."My Meds".  Non Cancon
p.s. Am I mistaken or isn't music radio 24/7 for Cancon now?

Re: My radio listeners will get an update tonight...

so you're still in non-compliance by playing the make-up cancon after midnite!

To answer your question, no.  the "broadcast day" is 18 hours between 6a and midnite

Re: My radio listeners will get an update tonight...

Mark, further, there are minimal cancon requirements for Cat 4 music, known as stingers or bridges less than 1 minute in duration.  Cancon does not apply to that.

I usually charge a hundred bucks for that information

Re: My radio listeners will get an update tonight...

I remember one morning back in the early summer of '64 when Wally played 'Popsicle' around 8:20am.  He apologised as soon as it was over...called it a mistake and said he'd never play it again.  No can con necessary at THAT point.  I, of course, thought that the song was FUN.

Wally would later tell me while he and I strolled through Yorkville following some Standard 'excuse' to drink for free late one Saturday afternoon in the mid 90s that the reason for his longevity and success was the fact that he didn't PISS people off.  I remembered the Jan and Dean 'incident' and said nothing.  Bit he sure PISSED *me* off back when I was 12.  Cost him a listener.

I also remember Ray's show.  The Tottenham Hotspur became my favourite 'football' team just based on their NAME.  I'd listen to hear how they did each Saurday with Ray.  My Mom had it on though the afternoon in the kitchen while she made dinner.  Bill Degan used to play some nifty tunettes for "Mom in the kitchen" too during the week.

My Grandpa DEPENDED on "Ontario's authoritative News Voice" for all of his radio news...almost hourly all day every day.  No matter what CHUM did...who they hired...what they tried to give away...how many public appearances they made...how cool tthey tried to portray themselves as being...how great Dick was... ... ...They couldn't dethrone the mighty 1010.

CFRB did that all by themselves.

Friggin' Popsicle.

Sorry to be a stickler but must have been another Jan and Dean song played in 1964 or what you are remembering happened in 1966 as that is when Popsicle was released and when it made the mighty CHUM CHART.

CFRB was a legendary call sign because of it's heritage.
Many of us still hold that image dear to us: Visit the studio of producer/writer Dave Leblanc which is a museum of CFRB lore. Dave "gets it" that CFRB is something to be proud of and deserves preservation.
When Ted Woloshyn took over mornings from Wally it was an event.  Though as the oldtimers like Bill Stephenson and Taylor Parnaby left the building, it lost its way. Steve Kowch tried to keep the heritage alive commissioning me to recreate VE Day in Toronto in 1945, a show I wish I had it to post for you.
Steve commissioned another show for the 75th anniversary that I started as an audio/video/interactive project.
That got cancelled with the move to "News Talk 1010".  The station dropped CFRB as an id and as I was told "has no history".  Sad.

*UPDATE: I have been reassured that Bell embraces the "heritage" of NewsTalk1010 CFRB.  What was said to me was two owners ago and is not the policy of the company today.

Re: My radio listeners will get an update tonight...

Yep...You're right about Popsicle.  Fitz...so I was 2 years older.

1010 is not the history Mark.  It's only about CFRB.  1050 ain't the history a little futher down Yonge St...the history was CHUM.  Both expunged.  [by idiots I might add]

But then I still think that AM can be playing music...and getting an audience.  You just have to offer what isn't available elsewhere on AM or FM for the old folks.  MANY of them are analog only.  AM still has about a 20-25 shelf life left.  Quick proof?  AM 740.  [mind you I haven't listened to it for awhile but they promote listening to it in sterio on line for the modern thinking blue-hairs.

Ya ya...I know "zoomers".  We aren't zoomers Moses.  We're boomers.  Ya Dink!!!

Re: My radio listeners will get an update tonight...

Back to my original point: I've shut down "Intervention Toronto" after a lot of thought.
Lots of comment too... Find my article here...Intervention: It hurts too much to go on.
