Stouffville radio station wants help with 'move' from town

WhiStle Radio wants to move down the FM dial so it can stay on the air.

The local radio station also wants to increase its signal strength from 50 watts to approximately 450 watts, with an improved antenna, which would then increase its reach beyond urban Stouffville.

However, the volunteer-run station requires $8,000 for an engineering study that graphically displays the coverage area for all FM stations that could be affected by the application. It is a requirement for WhiStle Radio’s application to Industry Canada and the CRTC for its move, according to a media release.

Representatives from the station requested an $8,000 grant from the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville during the Dec. 15 council meeting.

Council deferred making a decision until budget deliberations take place next month.

Earlier this year, the CRTC ruled a new Scarborough station could take over WhiStle’s 102.7 FM frequency. WhiStle wants to move to 102.9 FM.

Madness takes its toll.  Please have exact change.

"requested an $8,000 grant"

You're already in conflict-of-interest if they have named this "grant" request after you, Mr. Grant

Re: Stouffville radio station wants help with 'move' from town

The story doesn't stop there.
What frequency are they going after?
Fusion radio in Scarborough also wants a frequency.
They originally couldn't go after 102.7 because Whistle declared that there would be too much interference.
(somehow a multicultural station got the go ahead anyway...)

Whistle and Fusion are going to somehow have to become the best of buddies to declare that each station is far enough apart, and that fusion radio would also be a low power station anyway...
(while Scarborough Fusion radio's dream may be to reach Pickering, their reality might be that they'll be lucky to go anywhere past the parking lot, I gather...)

why isn't WhiStle going after Vista for the funding?  or Scarborough?  seems to me following the convoluted CRTC thread, from what i can understand....WhiStle should have been a bit more forward thinking.  Typically, if a LPFM is bumped, the bumper helps the bumpee with funding a new freq search.
