It Had To Happen: Radio Station Pulls Xmas Song Over #MeToo Movement

It was never a question of if, but when. And now a Cleveland radio station has pulled a long time Christmas classic from their airwaves, citing the #MeTooMovement. And after listening to the lyrics, it's easy to see they're not entirely wrong.

'Baby It's Cold Outside' pulled from Cleveland radio station amid #MeToo movement

As a non-fan of this uncool cruel Yule gruel, I just wish we could find an excuse to get rid of the other endless Xmas tunes, too!

So does this mean other songs that offend the meeeetoooooers have to go, and if so, can they go to work on the stuff black stations play?

Perhaps it's a politically incorrect term but perhaps that refers to stations like WBLK in Buffalo.

Re: It Had To Happen: Radio Station Pulls Xmas Song Over #MeToo Movement

L.C.B.O.s have to play the 'c.d. of the month'...no two ways about it.  ALL day/EVERY day for anywhere from 28 to 31 straight days.  Worse rotation than a top 20 station.  It drives them nuts and it should be outlawed as cruel and unusual punishment in the workplace.  The latest version includes 'Baby It's Cold Outside'.  What?!?!?!?!?

Maybe they could have had it pulled.  Problem was I told the lady 'manning' the cash-out at my 'favourite stock-up centre' about it yesterday while picking up supplies.  Doubtful they would have that song on 2 consecutive months.

The same CD every day!!!  All day.  Shoot me. [twice]

If banning this song was a publicity stunt, I have to say it worked - probably wilder than the station could ever have expected. Here are just a few links to this story that have appeared on the web, a yarn that has now gone worldwide. (And these are just a small number of the ones I found.)

Well, I skimmed the list of songs submitted for public approval on the station's website, looking for "Santa Baby," and there it was (Taylor Swift updating this holiday favorite for a new generation of listeners). The song's lyrics reinforce every negative stereotype I can think of re greedy females obsessed with the acquisition of luxury material possessions. But that's apparently okay for airplay.

The sound you hear is Dean Martin and many others spinning in their graves. What's astounding is spending most of my life hearing (all of my career playing) Baby It's Cold Outside** without hearing one complaint about the song.

** written by Frank Loesser in 1944.

Gosh, you mean a radio station took advantage of a social movement to score some cheap publicity while obscuring the real meaning of the protest? I never would have believed it.

Hey, sometimes cheap publicity can be quite effective.

Yes Mike. Please say "hi" to Val for me as well.  And Paul I'd like to suggest that you change the word "Lost" to Lots.  Works better I think.

Hi John.

"Grandma got run over by a reindeer" for explicit violence?  Bob n' Doug's "12 days of christmas" for promoting excess drinking?  this is silly talk.

Re: It Had To Happen: Radio Station Pulls Xmas Song Over #MeToo Movement

Well, this was pretty predictable: both Bell and Rogers now say they won't be playing "Baby It's Cold Outside" this Christmas season, either. In the case of the former, it's unlikely it was ever in their playlist in the first place.

Some Canadian radio stations pull 'Baby, It's Cold Outside'

What's really irritating about all this is that it's my understanding that the original station that started all this, WDOK in Cleveland, decided to pull the tune because one - count 'em - one listener complained.

I'm running it on a 24/7 repeat loop in the house. My spouse is running around with her hair on fire, but I remind her that, "Baby, it's cold outside".

To Lee, Val, Mike, Luke & John:    National Post states @ pg. 3 this morning that in 2004 (almost 15 yrs. ago)  it published a tongue-in-cheek article arguing that Baby It's Cold Outside s/b immediately banned.

If anything, I've always thought of Baby It's Cold Outside as a love song.

Any song will stand or fall based on its virtues.

A radio station can ban a song but we will make the final decision.

This one will be around a little while longer.

Ok here goes.
Pull these for various reasons.
White Christmas
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (replaced by Humankind)
And what about "Twas the Night Before Christmas. "  Animal cruelty..On Dasher, On Prancer, etc..
What was in Santa's pipe? Smoke circling his head like a wreath???

As a coda to this story, perhaps this, too, was inevitable:

“Baby It’s Cold Outside” Sung by Dean Martin is Number 9 on iTunes

Yesterday, Michael Smerconish on CNN asked:

Should radio stations stop playing the holiday classic "Baby It's Cold Outside"?

Results:

No - 92%
Yes - 8%

At that rate, also kindly ban all Christmas Carols with the word "gay" in the lyrics...

🎅"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" could be a good target for listener faux outrage, it'd also be perfect for an SNL skit using the song, imagine the Mommy/Santa combos you could come up with... are Toronto stations even playing it anymore??

I'm surprised that the, what was it Stafford used to call them.... Leaside Lucy's, haven't petitioned radio and television to ban the Chipmunks Christmas song because it's encourages children to be greedy.

Re: It Had To Happen: Radio Station Pulls Xmas Song Over #MeToo Movement

Well, this was pretty predictable, too. A radio station in Louisville, Kentucky has pledged to play every different version of "Baby It's Cold Outside" non-stop for several hours in a row on Sunday.

"We just thought everybody should calm down," said Chris Randolph, one of the station's disc jockeys.

More here.
