Was That Really Liz West In The White House?

Don't know how many people here watch "Designated Survivor," a show about the U.S. president that's filmed right here in Toronto. On last night's show, there was a scene where the press is grilling the Commander-in-Chief, played by Kiefer Sutherland. One of those reporters asking questions was none other than Liz West, former City TV and CHCH personality.

I worked with Liz for a while a long time ago, and she was (and I assume still is) a terrific person. Nice to see her back on the small screen, if only for a brief cameo. Hey, it was short, but at least she had a speaking part! (And it gives a whole new meaning to the term The "West" Wing.)

I always thought she was a great entertainment reporter, very funny. Her firing from CityTV was not a smart move, the first of many that has diminished the coolness and hipness of that once-great station.

Why should they remain hip and/or cool? The millenials aren't watching tv news, so they had to change with the times, while maintaining their dwindling audience. As that audience matures, they don't need as many gimmicks to keep them tuned in.

RA your "West Wing" thing was the perfect zing-er (oops poet/know it)

I seem to remember Liz filling in a long while back, on afternoons, on Newstalk 1010 pre Jay and Ryan. It was only a few times, when they had new cohosts every few days, or did she guest host on 640.

Imagine being or having been a reporter, and playing a reporter (cough John Moore cough) how weird that would feel, having to keep a polite expression on your face as the director gives you notes on how to "act like" a reporter, without raising a Spockian eyebrow in comment.

Re: Was That Really Liz West In The White House?

It's been quite the week for surprise Toronto talent cameos. First came Liz West on "Designated Survivor." And then on this week's episode of "The Goldbergs," they did a themed show surrounding the Mel Brooks movie "Spaceballs." At the very end, in the final tag, there was a dream sequence in which the title character was confronted by Dark Helmet, the flick's villain.

Turns out the voice behind the helmet was none other than Rick Moranis, who played the part in the film and is now a notoriously reclusive actor who almost never makes any TV or movie appearances. Somehow they convinced him to do this brief voice over. You can watch the very short sequence here

Moranis, of course, originally became famous for his SCTV work, and before his big fame, was a disc jockey on both CHUM and CFTR under the name "Rick Allen." (As you can hear from the aircheck below, there was absolutely no indication in those days of what he would become or how truly funny he'd turn out to be - although there's a small hint in his Ed Sullivan imitation at the end of a Peter Frampton song at the 2:40 mark.)
