Is The Music CanCon? Try The CRTC's New Free Public Database

It features almost 1,970 songs at launch and you can look up all of them. Given the occasional confusion about what qualifies as CanCon, the CRTC has launched an extensive database of music titles, all of which qualify for Canadian Content under the existing rules. Previously, there have been too many exceptions about what counts and what doesn't.

The list is designed to remove all doubt. You can search by song title, artist, release date (going all the way back to 1957), language or something called the ISRC, which I believe stands for International Standard Recording Code. Each choice will tell you if the song is legitmately CanCon or not and more tunes will be added as the years go by.

According to the CRTC, the tool is "a free, downloadable music database that makes it easier for broadcasters, artists and the public to identify Canadian music. For the first time, information that broadcasters use to identify Canadian music is available in one place.

The database brings together information previously spread across several industry sources, making it easier for Canadian artists to be discovered and played across the country.

This will also help radio stations identify and promote music that counts toward their Canadian content requirements."

You can find the database here.

Re: Is The Music CanCon? Try The CRTC's New Free Public Database

It was wrong (and a mess) for the very first artist I looked up.

Toronto's The Beaches are listed interchangeably with and without "The", there are multiples entries for some of the songs, a handful that are 4/4 Cancon are listed as not Cancon, and their biggest hit "Edge of the Earth," which is currently charting on US CHR isn't listed at all.

Great start!

Funny, I was just about to note the same thing. I looked up two bands at random that I know to be CanCon and they weren't listed. One was Ocean, which had a huge hit with "Put Your Hand In The Hand" in 1972 and The Five Man Electrical Band (even trying the word Five and the number 5), who had a large number of hits on the Canadian charts. There are no signs of either one. (Ironically, "Signs" was the name of their debut hit.)

In fairness, though the CRTC did say it was a work in progress and that they'd be continuously adding songs. But yes, it's not a complete database by any means.

I can kind of forgive them for those, as the release says "The initial release includes a large selection of popular Canadian songs. New releases and older songs will be added regularly to the database" but "Edge of the Earth" is neither an older song or a new release, is getting attention for being featured in a major Netflix show, and has 125 million streams on Spotify alone.

It's exactly a song that a pop programmer outside of Toronto would want to look up. If it's not there, the database is useless.

No Ian Thomas, not even as Tranquillity Base.  And one of about 25 versions of Aquarius by The Fifth Dimension is listed as CanCon. It looks like it will be  a while.....

Do they even know who Amy Sky is?
And there's only 10 entries in the folk and folk-oriented category.
There's a lot of songs and artists that would count, that category should have bin bigger.
Did they put the celtic music in the country, acoustic, or pop categories?
What a mes.

CRTC just published a correction to their announcement: "The initial release includes a large selection of popular Canadian songs. New releases and older songs will be added regularly to the database including additional French, Indigenous, and third-language music. As part of the initial phase, the CRTC welcomes feedback from users to help improve the database and ensure it continues to meet the needs of broadcasters, artists, and the public."

Is there an email?
I have to use dictation on my phone to write it so I have perfect spelling.
Can anyone tell me the keyboard command for using dictations on a windows computer?
