CRTC Approves Tx. Change For Kitchener FM For A Bizarre Reason

It's not exactly the most listened to or powerful FM station in Kitchener. In fact, CJTW at 93.7 is a low powered religious station that doesn't really get out very far. I don't think I've ever received them in the GTA.

The CRTC has allowed them to move to a new transmitter nearby the old one, and because the building is a little taller than their old one, they've had to decrease their power from an already low 420 watts to just 380.

But it's the strange reason for the request that caught my eye. It was outlined in the original plea from station GM  Chris Belcher to the Commission.

"This application is due to the fact that our current tower site (where we rent space on top of city hall) has become too difficult to access since it is on a municipal government building.

Over the years, this has developed into a significant issue for us.

Being a government building, our access to the transmitter site (on the very top of the building) is very limited. Typically office hours only Monday through Friday. After hours is incredibly difficult, and our transmitter issues do not always follow office hours.

Secondly, years ago when we placed our transmitter and antenna at city hall, there were very few rules regarding city hall security. However, over the years (due to a variety of threats) security at city hall and access to it has greatly changed.

As a result of this, we are forced to find a new tower site.

We were able to secure space (subject to CRTC approval) on a new building that is about two hundred feet away from city hall that does not suffer from the issues that our current location has.

While we concede that the building is taller, and could potentially increase our coverage area – our engineer has taken this into account and accordingly reduced our power output to minimize any broadcast area changes. With this new location, our coverage area (for all intents and purposes) remains relatively unchanged.

We absolutely need access to our equipment 24/7 (which this new building provides) and we are willing to decrease our power output to obtain it."

Changing your location because of threats to politicians. Stranger things have happened in local radio, but I can't think of one odder than this.

Re: CRTC Approves Tx. Change For Kitchener FM For A Bizarre Reason

The same company owned a station in brantford.
When I used to stay at the school for the blind there, I would listen to there christmas music, and I would listen for a break from the music on the other stations.
Now, the evanovs own it and its now a country station called country 93.9.
I miss the old faith fm format, they would even play crooners at christmas along with ccm christmas music.
