I have to say, Tuesday's episode of CBC's "Son of a Critch" took me by surprise.
It was their Christmas show, about cutting down a tree, broadcasting the Santa Claus parade and celebrating the Yuletide in Newfoundland.
Nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but in the middle of October?
Usually holiday editions don't get on the air until at least the end of November or later, unless a station is airing a dated rerun.
I realize this is the show's last year, but you rarely see an Xmas plot this early in the season. What they do in December is anybody's guess.

I thought the scenes between Ben Ainsworth and Malcom McDowell were extremely touching. Having lived through seeing a parent develop dementia and fade away to the end is not something I wish on anyone, well maybe except Agent Orange who seems to be already exhibiting it.

Way too early for their Christmas show. I wonder if their original playback schedule got messed up as they aired their Halloween themed episode, Eps. 4 - Masquerade, on Sept. 29th, again, a bit early IMO.

All the streamers run Christmas themed movies all year long. Isn't it around now that some radio stations start playing Christmas music 24/7? I watched that episode as well, didn't even think about why it was a holiday themed show. Agree with mic'em the storyline was very touching and the tie into Christmas made it even more.
Son Of A Critch is having a great final season. Strong cast, good stories.

I agree with you paterson1, they’re definitely going out with a bang! And to think I watched the first episode of this entire series on a whim and ended up watching all five seasons, even DVR it just in case! They CBC doesn’t have a hit that often, but Son Of A Critch qualifies.

The final season has only 12 episodes, so perhaps that's why they're so far ahead timeline-wise.
And I agree Malcolm McDowell is a terrific actor and they're lucky to get him for a Canadian series. I still love "A Clockwork Orange." (Of course, that "Clockwork" was half an hour ahead in Newfoundland!

They were indeed lucky to get Malcolm McDowell for a Canadian series! And I read that he has really enjoyed the experience. I also enjoy “A Clockwork Orange”, wore out the VHS and ended up buying the DVD. RA, have you watched McDowell’s 1968 film “If…”? Another great performance from him.

Colton Gobbo who plays Mike Critch Jr. aka Mike Campbell of VOCM, who is a Sudbury native , was interviewed on the CBC Sudbury morning show yesterday . He confirmed as I suspected, the final season was filmed at the same time season 4 was. Hence why none of the characters appear to have aged in the past year. By the way, the Gobbo family is well known here, they owned a large towing and transport company along with a heavy truck repair facility for decades. They sold it some years back.

The whole cast is strong. Always liked that Mike Jr. was the kind older brother and followed in his fathers footsteps to work at the station. No doubt the "Christmas episode" will be repeated prior to the big day.
