Rod Black is a great broadcaster and has proven it over the years. But I'm not entirely sure what to make of his constantly leaning back on his sports roots on his AM640 show every day.
While he does the usual talk subjects (the election, Trump, the Alberta vote, traffic etc.) he spends at least one or more segments talking to retired or even current athletes, people he knows well from his years in the business. (Wednesday's guest was former Blue Jay star Josh Donaldson.)
There's nothing wrong with that per se, but I wonder how it goes over with the average 640 listener. Wouldn't it make more sense to have these kinds of interviews on The Fan or TSN 1050? Is this a case of Black sticking to what he knows best? Or is this turning off the audience expecting more newsy topics?
I have to admit that in my case, it's a tune-out. If I want sports talk, I know where to go. And AM640 isn't it.

I tried Black a few times for relief from Agar's self-obsessed blowhard act, but stopped for that very reason. If I want sports talk, which I don't, I can go to 590. 640 really is the gang that can't shoot straight.

It's an interesting question. I haven't heard Rod's 640 stuff. If the old adage is "write what you know", then "broadcast what you know", I suppose. I can see how it's a crutch, and he may not be helping the listening public (or his bosses) think of him beyond "a sports guy".
I think of Barb DiGiulio, who despite her considerable sports broadcast background, very rarely talked sports on her onetime Newstalk 1010 evening show - to the point I only gradually learned about that background later with an offhand mention here or there or a bio blurb.

Compared to 1010, I think 640's new direction is more of a lifestyle/shock jock/entertainment talk station, almost like its mojo days.
Ben mulroney mostly talks about celebrities and movies along with culture war stuff.
The only heard talker on there is gred brayty who's like john and jerry on 1010.
