The FM Radio Station Located In The Middle Of An Airport

It's on 103.9 FM and its on air talent is forced to drive to the MacArthur Airport everyday to get to work.

WRCN is in Long Island, N.Y. and is an all news outlet. But it's not broadcasting from a typical studio in a building downtown. The entire radio station is based at the local airport. According to CEO John Caracciolo, the idea was to reach people where they are - and perhaps, aren't, after they board a flight.

"Most broadcasters spend a fortune trying to get their stations in front of people. We decided years ago to put our radio station where the people already are. Every day, travelers walk right past our studio. They see live radio happening in front of them. That’s the kind of connection local radio should have with its community."

Plus if you work there and you're going off on vacation directly after a shift, it's an easy way to get out of Dodge. It certainly gives a whole new meaning to the term "on the air."

Re: The FM Radio Station Located In The Middle Of An Airport

Wasn't the short-lived CFYZ 1280 AM based at Toronto's Pearson International Airport? The station didn't last long, starting in July 1985 with mostly flight information for travellers, before morphing into an all business format.

It crashed for good in 2007, when the Greater Toronto Airports Authority turned in the license, ending the ill-fated experiment.

CJTM-AM, a low powered outlet from Metropolitan Toronto University branded as MET Radio, has been on 1280 since 2016, but with a power of only 99 watts, it's tough to get if you're not near the place downtown.

Durham Radio Inc.'s headquarters (and studios for CJKX-FM, CKGE-FM and CKDO) are at the Oshawa Airport, and CKDO and CKGE have been there since the late '90s, when they were still part of Power Broadcasting. CJKX moved in at some point around the mid 2000s, after more than a decade on Westney Road in Ajax, the station's city of licence.

So Power Broadcasting moved CKGE and CKDO to the airport?
I thought it was Durham radio inc that moved them from their King street location in Oshawa.
(CKQT became CKGE under Power Broadcasting)

That's correct, it was during the Power era. I remember CHEX-TV Peterborough's "Durham Community Calendar" in the late '90s mentioning the airport's address for mailing in event info. DRI came in when they acquired the two Oshawa stations from Corus in '03.

Wow, I had no idea. I hope their employees all having parking passes!

I wonder what the playlist would be for an airport station? Leavin' On A Jet Plane By Peter, Paul & Mary, Steve Miller's Jet Airliner, Gonna Fly Now (The Theme From Rocky) by Bill Conti, Switchin' To Glide - The Kings, Eight Miles High by The Byrds and I guess anything from The Jefferson Airplane. Just to name a few.
