Numeris' Annual Format Report Contains A Surprise For Radio

In addition to numbers about traditional TV network watching, the latest Numeris Year-End Report contains some numbers about radio you might not expect.

In the lookback at the past year, radio held its own with the top format being - wait for it - news/talk, coming in at 32%. Adult contemporary was next at 18%.

"All News/Talk holds the largest overall audience, but skews noticeably older. Conversely, Hot AC boasts the strongest female audience, while Adult Contemporary holds a balanced, female-leaning core. All Sports/Talk continues to deliver the strongest male concentration. At the younger end of the spectrum, mainstream Top 40/Urban and Modern/Alternative Rock attracted some of radio’s youngest audiences."

In the end, though, it's usually the demo and not so much the numbers that matter. Advertisers want to reach a younger audience, so the news/talk lead may not wind up becoming as important as the age group that prefers Top 40, even if there are fewer overall ears.

The results are from the Broadcast Year 2025-2026, 18+

Broadcast Dialogue has more on the specifics for both TV and radio.

News/talk number 1?
What a serprise.
Here's what I thoght was number 1 by number of stations and 2, 3, 4, and 5.
1, hot AC, 2, Classic hits and throughback pop, 3 AC and the breeze, 4, rock of all types, and 5, news/talk plus CBC.
6 Would be CHR, the hots, vergions, and kisses, and 7 was sports but if this one was rated, then now 7 is ethnic mostly southasian and european.

Makes sense; CBC is still a monster 12+ in many markets, commercial talk does well 12+ in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and massive in Montreal (both English and French)....add in 680 here and it all adds up.

Why are our 2 talk stations so low in the ratings while CKMW and CJAD are more at the top in there markets?
Why is the long trusted CFRB so low?
640 Is low for its own reasons.
And 680 news's all news and not news/talk.
And radio 1 is national talk.

on this graph...  680 is being lumped into news/talk... but I agree is way different than a news/talk format.  I think you would find when you break things down, the All News formats do better than News/Talk unless there is no other choice.   CJAD for example is a market without any other choice in English, where 1010 has killed their newsroom, has a weaker lineup than they use to, and aged themselves a bit and has only pulled their ratings down.
