Fired CBS Radio News Employees Get The Last Laugh

Last May 22nd marked the literal end of an era. That was the day CBS Radio News, a broadcasting institution that lasted 100 years, did its final national newscast, as its new owners implemented severe cost cutting that put at least 700 people out of work.

Now many of those who once toiled for the famous newsroom had one last poke at management, when CBS Radio News won the Edward R. Murrow Award at the Radio Television Digital News Association’s gala on Monday for its coverage of a Washington D.C. plane crash.

When the annuncement was made, the crowd rose and made sure the voices that were let go those last few days heard them loud and clear.

"When the Overall Excellence award was presented, the group assembled onstage, a sign reading “Fired for Overall Excellence” went up, and the journalists in the room gave them a standing ovation that went on for minutes...

"It was a powerful, bittersweet moment: journalists recognized among the best in the industry for work produced by a newsroom that no longer exists.”
