Led Zeppelin 45 Band Wanted Destroyed Turns Up On UK Show

The rare record is a 45 RPM that came out when the band first started - and you know it well. "Whole Lotta Love" was one of Led Zeppelin's very first hits, but it broke the group's strict policy of never releasing any of their songs as singles.

Their record company, Atlantic, pressed some 500 singles before angry band members found out and demanded they all be recalled. But not all of them came back. Now the rare disc ended up on the U.K. version of The Antiques Roadshow.

So what was it ultimately worth according to the experts? About £1,000, which translates to around $1,883 in Canadian dollars.

Frankly, I would have thought such a rare record would have been valued at a lot more.

The no 45 policy did not apply to North America and I bought a copy of the single and it was their first hit here.

Well, I hope you still have it if it's worth $1,800!

No unfortunately one of those lent out and never returned. A few great ones like that over the years. The North American single was mass released so it’s not that valuable. In fact if I ever want to replace the childhood purchase for nostalgic reasons I probably can. I just called Kops and one of their stores has a red label copy on Atlantic for 19.95. Mine looked the same.

I'm afraid to confess how much money I spent at Kopp's on Queen St. W. Haven't been there in years, but way back in the 80's, Martin Koppel took a lot of my money! I remember being so excited by his store that we did a Monitor 680 feature on him on CFTR. He was great!

I bought the 45 of “Immigrant Song”, probably because I couldn’t afford the whole album! So Zep did release a few titles as singles in North America.

I used to buy 45's at Kopps in the 80's as well. Chart hits that were hard to find like the ones below.  The James Taylor and Rolling Stones may not have been from Kopps. I don't remember. Note the Five American's single on Hanna Barbera records. Most of these were American pressings. :

Re: Led Zeppelin 45 Band Wanted Destroyed Turns Up On UK Show

Martin Koppell had quite the memory. He had thousands of records in his store, including those stored away in his basement. I remember asking him for a really obscure 45 called "Hey Da Da Dow" by The Dolphins.

He looked at me for a second, then said in that memorable British accent, "Hang on a sec." He then disappeared into the bowels of the basement and came back with about 6 copies of it. I was astounded, not only that he remembered the song, but that he recalled he had the record and knew where it was.

It was a great store.

I remember having one really long conversation with him and he was very gracious and showed me around the shop. I believe I bought some old CHEY charts from him that day and had never seen any before. I also remember once or twice seeing Dave Booth ( Daddy Cool ) at the store. He might have worked there.

Looks like Immigrant Song was their 3rd highest charting single on Billboard and Whole Lotta Love was almost a double sided hit:
