It started on-time at 11:29 ET on WNBC in New York. So the delay was up to the local NBC station.

My TV provider brings in affiliates from Boston and SNL started on time last night.
I had CTV on and the news anchor even promoted SNL coming up next, then all of a sudden I was watching Seinfeld.

Where I live it was delayed on CTV Kitchener. NBC Detroit had a college football game which ran overtime. CTV made a mess of it with the delay. Right after Heather Butts on CTV National News promoted the show as coming right up. Then CTV went into a promo for the new season, then, as TheWiz mentions into Seinfeld. To make it more confusing at the beginning of Seinfeld, CTV had a Programming Note at the bottom of the screen. Problem was there was no programming note, no message, nothing just a white box!
And CTV didn't even get to simsub SNL in my area when the show came on 11:45. So I guess in some parts of the country the show started on time on CTV since it did on NBC. Also odd when the show began, a graphic came up that said "Recorded live from an earlier show". This appeared to be put on by NBC.
The program itself was ok IMO. Not great, but not terrible, just a show.

I know someone asked recently about CTV carrying SNL.
Now CFTO channel 9 or CTV 1 carries the local News on Saturday night at 10:30 pm then the national at 11 followed by SNL at 11:30

Yep SNL shifted networks north of Lake Ontario. Sadly it's no longer on Global TV, but the Toronto Toro's games aren't either.
It's up and down for that show,. But lately I've seen better than worse. Lorne Michaels misses a lot, but he's still got a good eye.

I think CTV blew it last evening... imho, they should have taken the Live NBC EAST feed in order to hit at 11:29pm. Waiting for the various affiliates (WGRZ, WDIV etc.) to complete the Saturday late news after the college football overtime was a complete waste for the sake of chasing the SimSub,
The casual viewer of SNL up here would most likely have gone to Global out of habit, and when they did not see SNL they would check the Program Guide and then tune to CTV... and find Seinfeld. Confusing...
It should be important for the first show of the new season on a new network to start on time. Especially when NBC had the live feed available, and this was communicated to affiliates at least thirty minutes earlier. Plenty of time to make the right decision, and avoid the on air presentation mess.

WDIV Detroit and CTV Kitchener were not simsubed for SNL last night, at least on Bell Fibe. Both began about 15 minutes late however. They did have simulcast at 11:30 when Seinfeld began but for SNL itself none. Too bad they didn't opt for the live east feed as Glen Warren mentions and start on time.

This explains some of what happened but it doesn't excuse CTV missing the boat.

I might be stating the obvious but this whole screw up indicates to me that the CTV National news is pre-taped because if they knew SNL was delayed , Heather Butts wouldn’t have plugged it as “coming up next” and might have even said it was delayed. I had to DVR it and of course it was cut short due to the delay. And after all that, it was a so-so season premiere and I thought the musical act, Katseye, seemed to be missing their dancing poles….
