First New Show Of Broadcast TV Season Returns - & It's Canadian
Remember when the Fall brought all the new shows to broadcast TV? When I was a kid, it was a big deal and I couldn't wait to see my favourites return along with the newcomers.
That was then. Now, with streaming introducing new programs all year long, it's just not the same and the U.S. networks - currently filled with a lot of sports - have actually cut the number of shows they produce.
So there are fewer debuts coming in September and October than there used to be. And I noticed that the first new premiere of the season is actually Canadian. CBC's "Son of a Critch" returns for its final season this week. I'm not always a huge fan of Canuck TV, but I do like this one.
And I can understand why it's coming to an end. The titular star, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, a British lad, is getting too old to keep playing the young and naive character (he's 17 now) and will soon grow out of the role.
The new season begins this Tuesday at 8:30 PM on CBC if you want to set your DVRs.

The US nets also produced and promoted a preview show of their new and returning series. A fall launch special, which was probably a re worked Up Front, or affiliate reel cut complete with commercial breaks...

The CBS Fall Preview shows airs this coming Thursday night (Sept.10) at 9 PM.

The first four 13-episode seasons of Son of a Critch had always debuted in early January and ran to April. For the final season, they've delayed the start to September, whether it's to accommodate someone's filming schedule, or just because they can because it was already in the can.

I enjoyed Son Of A Critch as well. I am watching the repeats more and more and generally it is a good show with a strong cast and stories that have a purpose. I liked the way that the program started with the students moving from grade eight into high school. Every season moved up into the next school year, and we see the students grow and change every year. This last season is graduation year and the end of the show. Mark Critch the creator of the series always intended for it to end when the cast finished high school. And the main character is now 17, the appropriate age in grade 12 and graduation.

Now that the CBC has lost HNIC, “Son Of A Critch” is the only show I’ll be watching on their channel. I originally watched an interview with Mark Critch before the series started, so I caught the premiere episode and every one since, great show! I particularly like Malcolm McDowell as Grandpa and find it hard to believe that he’s the same actor who frightened me in Clockwork Orange! My DVR is set, thanks to RA for the reminder, looking forward to it! I also like the fact that there’s a radio station involved, so we can talk about it on this board…..

Benjamin Ainsworth was in the latest season of House of the Dragon , a Game of Thrones prequel from HBO. His character was barbequed by a dragon in the season finale.

Benjamin Ainsworth was interviewed on CBC's Q program yesterday by Tom Power, preceded by some minor Welsh actor named Sir Anthony Hopkins. It was a riveting hour .

I watched the season debut of "Critch" on Tuesday. The kid has really grown between seasons and I can see why this will be its last year. Probably a good decision. It tends to happen a lot when you base a show on a young boy and he has the nerve to get older when you're not filming!
That said, Ainsworth has proven to be a big talent and undoubtedly has a big future ahead of him.
