Whatever Happened To Radio News & Commentary?

Back in its heyday, CFRB was known as Ontario’s Authoritative News Voice. Now they don’t really even have a newsroom, let alone much of a voice. But one of the features that made them so popular were the “news and commentary” presentations that aired throughout the day. I know the ratings were huge for Jack Dennett’s 8 AM newscast, in which he not only told you what happened, but what he thought about it, complete with excellent writing and delivery.

Then there was Charles Doering’s news and views at 11:50 AM every weekday. Not to mention the biggest one of them all, Gordon Sinclair’s pontificating on the day’s stories at 5:50 PM.

Whatever happened to this trend, where a fairly learned news person would add their own interpretation to the significant stories of the day? You didn’t have to agree with them. Sinclair could be especially curmudgeonly, which kept people tuning in. Perhaps it could be argued that the talk shows that follow the news now serve that function. Or that there aren’t enough knowledgeable news people left to actually comment intellectually on the day’s stories.

Either way, I sometimes find I miss the occasional comment section that used to make the newscasts on 1010. But  then I suppose not everybody shares that opinion…

I share that opinion.  I listen to radio for news, information and respectable opinion on both.  As a habitual listener for decades, I remember how it used to serve that purpose extremely well.  Over time, like other traditional sources like newspapers and TV, declining ad revenue due to online garbage and dwindling attention spans of the sheep-like masses addicted to their ironically-named 'smart' phones, have reduced all three to pale imitations of themselves.  I was never a fan of Bill Carroll back in the day, but now find myself gladly listening to his hour on 1010 daily, for a small taste of what talk radio used to be.  We're in big trouble, when most people now look for information on the likes of 'Truth Social' or 'Instagram'.

Also love bill and miss cfrb's commentaries.
I also do love agar's monologues at the start of every show.

Re: Whatever Happened To Radio News & Commentary?

That's one reason why virtually nobody listens to CFRB and AM 640.  Too many of their talk shows are all comment and opinion.  And a lot of the comment and opinion isn't very well thought out and only reflects the hosts bias and what party they likely vote for.

I don't want to hear any opinions from news types. Those days are over.

Just the facts.

Absolutely. Or even worse: callers.

Re: Whatever Happened To Radio News & Commentary?

News combined with opinion has its place.  In newspapers it's called a column.
In radio it's news and opinion, but it is made clear it is factual news mixed with a radio op ed writer.
Regardless there has to be a place for pure by the book reporting in radio TV and newspapers.
What is also good is if a talk show host has real life experience to back up their talk show topics.
As a Vancouver guy I grew up with highly informed journalists turned talk show hosts like Jack Webster, Pat Burns, Raif Mair and many others.
Today talk show hosts tend to be just people with opinions to not back them up with experience.
Ergo such commentary as "well, I'm no lawyer," or, "well, I'm no doctor," or "well, I'm no teacher." or even worse, "well, I'm no journalist."etc.

Re: Whatever Happened To Radio News & Commentary?

I miss the days of Dick Smyth and Brian Henderson on CHUM. Dick Smyth also did commentaries on CityTV when he was with CHUM, and when he moved over to CFTR, his TV commentaries moved over to CFMT (now known as OMNI 1).

I remember when 1010 got in trouble with the CBSC for that. David McKee in December 2019 making a quip on his 5 pm newscast which was separate from the branded "News & Views" 6 pm segment.

Editorializing in News Must Be Distinct or Clearly Labelled, Says Canadian Broadcast Standards Council

And an editorial (ha!) on that:

Colby Cosh: The eccentric logic of Canadian broadcast standards when Dave’s just being Dave

My sense is 1010 dialed things down a bit "editorially" after that incident, but I think it might've just been all sorts of other factors and not conscious - the pandemic and less in-studio guests, beefing up the profile of the morning Round Tables (done by Zoom/phone), etc. - and in general a much blander vibe and constant staff cuts, newsroom closure, etc.

McKee came out okay from that whole thing; since 2021 he's been the Premier Office's "Director of Correspondence".

Good for him! Settling into a cushy non-news job where reality, honesty, fidelity and truth are no longer shackles on his opinions! He shouldn't have been a news-man in the first place if this was his end goal.

Edit - I'm sure he's in regular contact with Hutton, to ensure the proper messages are conveyed on the NEWS-talk station. And certainly there are no invoices.

Re: Whatever Happened To Radio News & Commentary?

Then there's this commentary from 1995 that got Henny in some hot water:

Re: Whatever Happened To Radio News & Commentary?

Back in the 1970s, jazz DJ Phil McKellar made some disparaging remarks about blacks on CKFM not realizing that his mike was open at the time.  He was fired by CKFM and this incident ended his radio career. I remember the incident in 1995 with Henderson and Smyth. I was very upset at the time and felt that both of them should have been fired by their respective stations and banished from broadcasting. Shameful behaviour without any consequences. I was not a fan of either man even before this incident.
