Bell Canada recently sent out notices to various neighbourhoods warning that keeping up POTS - short for Plain Old Telephone Service - was going the way of the dodo. So if you still have one, they're coming for you. The company says the cost of repair, combined with endless copper thefts, is simply not worth it anymore since most people now depend on their cellphones. 

So if you have one of those old cordless phones  - or even a wall phone - you're eventually going to be permanently disconnected. The Toronto Star has a story about how this affected one eldery man, who found himself without a phone to use when he needed it most. 

It's a pretty scary tale and I'm betting it won't be the only one. I have both a cellphone and a landline, so this will affect me. Why have I not hung up on this old tech? The answer is simple: in the event of a true emergency or a blackout, that phone always, always works - something I can't definitively say about my cell service.

It's like an insurance policy and despite the cost, I'm not looking forward to giving it up when Big Blue comes calling in my area with the shut-off warning. It's been a figurative life saver in emergencies past and I admit to being nervous to have this potential lifeline pulled away. 

Old fashioned? Maybe. But I'll still miss that non-wireless wonder when its time comes. And I hate hanging up on it.
