I know, I know, another Toronto Sun screed against the CBC. Not a surprise. But even lovers of the Corp. will have to admit this is going way too far. And the story comes from someone who's a big fan of the CBC, but thinks this is a crazy overreach.
In just a few weeks, the world will mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, which killed thousands of people, including Canadians. You can expect to see a ton of retrospectives on the event, as it almost unbelievably hits a quarter of a century.
So what then, to make of a CBC memo which is ordering all its journalists not to call the disaster a "terror" attack? It stunned columnist Warren Kinsella.
"This week, I received a memo — presumably confidential — addressed to CBC News staff. It is authored by one Basem Boshra, who is the “Senior Director of Journalistic Standards and Public Trust at CBC News.” In Boshra’s memo, reporters are editors are told this:
“Do not refer to the Sept. 11 attacks as terrorist attacks.”
Boshra states that all in bold letters, italicized, as if to emphasize the point. To make clear it is a directive, not a suggestion."
Wow. You can only take sensitivity so far. This is beyond it. If this is true, in the words of Ricky Ricardo, the CBC has some 'splanin to do. Should be interesting to watch their coverage and see how much effort it takes to avoid the word.
9/11 wasn't a 'terrorist attack,' according to the CBC
Offline
This is seriously pathetic and Boshra should be disciplined over it, in other words, fired. Only the CBC would pull something like this. As RA stated, “you can only take sensitivity so far. This is beyond it”. No kidding. Next they’ll be denying tariffs! And to think that we pay for this, in more ways than one. God help us, and them, please.

Sadly, I suspect a lot of young people are being taught this type of 'critical thinking' in their post-secondary institutions, too.

Yup. Wouldn't want the truth to upset an imported major voting block, thanks to Trudeau. Woe, Canada.

This just in - a new memo from the CBC orders their reporters to change the phrase "World War II" to "A Second Global Disagreement."

In the heat of fast breaking news events, people make mistakes. Try watching some of the raw, unedited coverage of 9/11 from CNN and count the number of rumours, false reports of bombings and other speculation that occurred on that day as people struggled to comprehend a tragedy of global proportions. In any case, here’s the CBC’s announcement of coverage marking the one-year anniversary of 9/11, clearly calling it a terrorist attack:

Just who is he trying not to offend?
You can get your fill of Basem Boshra from his days at the Montreal Gazette.

Not to get into conspiracy theories BUT...on the Ben Mulroney show today one of his guests floated the theory that this story has suddenly appeared courtesy of government interference south of the border and soon after trade negotiations broke down. This was done to try and whip up anti CBC and Liberal sentiments within the harder right in Canada who dislike CBC and public broadcasting and some that are fence sitters regarding Trump and the tariffs.
No doubt it is possible that CBC initially was hesitant to call it a terrorist attack but it doesn't sound like it lasted very long if in fact reporters on air were not using the term. What is in a memo and what ends up on air often are two different things. And any reports or news conferences that CBC ran from US media on 9/11 would have referred to the disaster as a terrorist attack. Ben's guest also said that people sympathetic to this Post Media story were claiming that CBC still wasn't calling 9/11 a terrorist attack. This is not true.

None of us can confirm or deny the existence of this memo, but the author of the piece, Warren Kinsella, was asked on air point blank if he'd seen the document. He said, without hestitation, that he had. I believe him.
The real proof will come on Sept. 11, 2026, when the CBC covers the 25th anniversary. If none of their reporters, anchors or guests use the term "terrorists" at any time during the hours-long coverage, then I guess we'll know for sure.

The memo itself really doesn't matter. What matters would be if it's supposed direction ended being CBC policy. But looking at the post from BowmanvilleBob showing the promo on the CBC website indicates that it wasn't. The very first line says-"one year after the terrorist attacks that rocked the United States.." So if they were calling it a terrorist attack on the CBC website 24 years ago, it would be hard to believe that they wouldn't in 2026.

Unfortunately, you can't judge what they did 24 years ago with what they'll do now. New people are in charge and they bring in new policies. Times have changed in these more politically correct days and we know CBC is very sensitive to those issues. Terms they used then, such as those to describe the Indigenous, as an example, would be unthinkable today.
The only proof will come on coverage day and whether they step this dumb idea back due to all the bad publicity. My hope is they will.
But whatever they decide, the damage to the Corp.'s reputation may be already done. This story has now appeared everywhere, including the New York Post, Mediaite and other popular online sites. Even if they decide to reverse the plan, the publicity is already out there.

How about what they said five years ago then?
The nature of today’s news cycle means this story will likely be forgotten within 72 hours, except by those who’s hate for the CBC seems so deep-seated that nothing will likely ever change their minds.

If it's a new regime, you never know what to expect. So what they did 5 years ago may not be relevant today. If we haven't learned that from what's going in the White House, we never will.
Let's wait and see what they do on the day in question before this question is answered. It's my hope they do the right thing and ignore this idiotic edict.

Mr Bluffs, what are you talking about. When Zoran Mamdani was elected major of NY, the Marc Levin and Laura Loomers of the world were predicting the imposition of Sharia Law and the coming of the new Jihad. His approval rating right now in NY is close to 70%. That 70 % includes Christians, Jews and Muslims. Have the forces of Commie Jihad overtaken NY ?
Mamdani by the way is Shia Muslim and Shias have been opposed to organizations like Isis and al-Queda. Both organizations have taken many Shia lives.

That last comment is way over the top. There is no evidence of "forced conversion" with Muslims in this country or any other in this part of the world. I'm not sure what your obsession with this topic is (you've commented on it before) but I would appreciate if we call a halt to this here, before it goes even farther. You're welcome to your beliefs. But when they veer into hate speech, I won't have them here. And it has nothing to do with radio or TV in Ontario or Western New York.
Thanks.

I think you have your answer. Seems that CBC ignored this supposed "idiotic edict" 24 and 5 years ago. Five years ago they were under the guide of one Catherine Tait who is credited with putting CBC on this hyper woke and PC path. I don't sense that they have become more so since she departed a few years ago.
It is also worth noting that stories like this don't die even after proven incorrect and false. Remember how the US government and media hours after the 9/11 tragedy were saying that all or most of the terrorists may have come through the Canadian border? Even when it was obvious that they didn't, the story and rumour is still out there. Those that don't like Canada (or in this case the CBC) will continue to act like it happened and was fact.
Even the current regime in Washington were claiming because of Canada's poor border security, fentanyl was pouring into the US through the northern border. This was proven not true, even using US government figures, but the myth and rumour continues to this day.
Some people and governments just can't admit that they were wrong...

I have no memory (or proof) that Ms. Tait ever issued such an order about using the word "terrorist." And I strongly suspect you don't either, mainly because it never happened. This is a new regime and a new memo and the one thing we can agree on is hoping it gets ignored by the on air staff there or get rescinded before it happens. Again, we won't know for sure until it actually does or doesn't happen.
The other false but enduring reports you cite have nothing to do with the CBC or its management, nor to my knowledge have they ever reported them as fact. It's the usual gang of idiots on the Internet, who have no credibility.

This "leaked memo" phenomena has happened before. Just a few years ago and oddly enough again through the National Post. And a CBC spokesperson editor in chief Brodie Fenlon addressed the term terrorists and how CBC handles it. It is worth noting that this policy has been around for years and CBC's policy mirrors that of AP, Reuters, BBC among others.

This article attempts to explain the CBC's otherwise baffling decision about the word "terrorist" in relation to 911, quoting CBC editor-in-chief Brodie Fenlon about the reasoning behind the move. I'm not entirely convinced it's a good idea, because "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."
But his logic at least outlines the reasoning behind the decision.
"Attribution of the word 'terrorist' has been our policy for decades — mirrored by other news organizations such as the BBC, AP, AFP and Reuters, among many others," Fenlon wrote.
He said CBC "does not itself designate specific groups as terrorists, or specific acts as terrorism, regardless of the region or the events, because these words are so loaded with meaning, politics and emotion that they can end up being impediments to our journalism."
Fenlon posted an excerpt of the CBC’s language guide that explains the policy. It says attacks such as Sept. 11, the London bombings in 2005 or the suicide bombing at a Moscow airport in 2011 should be referred as attacks, not terrorist attacks."
Glad I never worked for the CBC. I understand what he's saying but sometimes you've got to call a spade a spade. I would have found this policy very hard to follow.
