Same Global Morning Show To Be Seen In 6 Cities Across The Country

We all know Corus has been cutting staff and shows across the country as it struggles to stay on the air and survive. The latest big change is in its Global morning shows, which - in six different cities in several provinces - will now be one show only.

Viewers in Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Regina will all be getting the same show, while the AM wake-up program in Calgary, Edmonton and BC will keep their local status.

"Under the new model, the current Global News Morning programs in the Prairie and Eastern markets become one show, covering the news of the day across local, regional, national, and international stories."

Not exactly what you want in a local morning show and I think this may have the same kind of effect that their noon news divided across Toronto and Montreal do - token news stories about each place can't replace a fully local news show.

This looks like an almost national morning show. Here is my guess for program times. Halifax 7am to 10am, Toronto 6am to 9am, Winnipeg 5am to 8am.

Clearly a winning strategy.

Re: Same Global Morning Show To Be Seen In 6 Cities Across The Country

The changes started on Monday, although the company insists no one was let go in the transition, something I find almost impossible to believe (unless they're not including the previous mass firings earlier this summer.)

“We remain committed to providing viewers with accessible, relevant and timely news content, while continuing to evolve our programming to best serve our audiences,” a Corus spokesperson said in a statement.

I take "evolve" to mean with the fewest paid employees possible.

And that's not the end of the changes. Beginning next week, some of the technical production of the shows will be done out of Toronto.

Broadcast Dialogue outlines the rest of the changes to the Global Noon News.

I can't say for sure until I see it, but if I thought including Montreal in a Toronto-based newscast was bad, I can hardly wait to see what a hodgepodge this could be.

The headline is slightly misleading - this is only in Central Canada and the Maritimes. Global BC, Edmonton and Calgary are not affected.

And in other news…veteran correspondent Jeff Semple has been named as the new host of Global’s Ottawa-based political show “The West Block”.

Thank GOD.

Whatever happened to the excellent Mercedes Stephenson, who hosted the show until she left for maternity leave? It was my understanding she'd be back.

In June 2026, it was announced that "From Global to the Globe: Mercedes Stephenson to succeed the legendary Robert Fife and become the new Ottawa bureau chief at the Globe and Mail".

Stephenson's own X account correspondingly reads "Incoming Globe and Mail Ottawa Bureau Chief. Wrapping up the last days of parental leave with my wee one."

I believe she began her maternity leave in September 2025 so I expect we'll see her Globe and Mail reporting starting soon.

Thanks. Did not see that. The Globe is lucky to have her. She's an excellent reporter.

Re: Same Global Morning Show To Be Seen In 6 Cities Across The Country

Here's a video (Facebook) that Erin Chalmers, Global Edmonton AM host, posted.

Pretty good summary for the change in the west for anyone curious.

And yes....she confirms that the local AM production team is/will be gone.  Hosts stay.  September 1 for the change in Edmonton.
