U.S. Trade Demands Included Not Forcing CanCon Onto American Streamers

There was a lot that was wrong with the U.S.-Canada trade deal that this country rejected over the weekend. And according to the Globe and Mail, one of the "no go's" for us was a request to drop any requirement that American streaming services like Disney + and Netflix be forced to meet CanCon requirements.

"On Friday evening, the U.S. negotiating team introduced an unexpected demand that Canada provide exemptions to its laws requiring big U.S. streamers to boost the discoverability of Canadian content, including French-language content, in this country, according to a senior government source."

The feds refused that demand, arguing that all program providers must contribute and promote national talent and shows, just like Canadian stations must do.

For their part, the streamers insist they already give huge exposure to Canadian shows and music and the rules shouldn't apply to a foreign service.

Ottawa rejected last-minute U.S. demand to drop Cancon requirements for streaming services

Re: U.S. Trade Demands Included Not Forcing CanCon Onto American Streamers

From the GAM article - “At a press conference on Saturday after the breakdown of the talks the previous evening, Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government had not been prepared to make concessions to Canada’s sovereignty.
He said Canada would not “compromise our sovereignty, protection for French language, or our culture,” adding that these issues had never been up for negotiation during the trade talks.”

Historically, attacking a nation’s sovereignty is one of the steps of destabilization with the intent of “conquering” said nation. We may have dodged a bullet but this is a dangerous signal from Washington that isn’t really about Netflix or other streamers.

I agree with Shorty Wave.  It seems like a main "irritant" for the current US government is the fact that Canada exists. I am glad that we didn't agree to a stacked one sided "deal" that only benefits one side.
The cancon and streaming requirements are a minor side show.  The real goal is to control or have the final say on resources and who we trade with.  At some point fresh water is going to be another big issue.  The Colorado River is just years away from drying up.  Bumpy days ahead!
