Ex-Blue Jays Player/Broadcaster Buck Martinez To Be Honoured At Dome

He retired after battling - and apparenly beating - cancer. Now the man who went from behind the plate to behind the mic is returning to the Dome next weekend on a day when the team will honour him for his contributions.

Whenever I think of Buck, I naturally think of his time at Sportsnet. But his on-air career didn't actually start there.

"Towards the end of his playing career, Martinez had dabbled in broadcasting, first doing post-game radio hits with the late, great Tom Cheek and then covering post-season action on radio in 1982 and the All-Star Game the following year.

Though he has been synonymous with Blue Jays broadcasts on Sportsnet, you have to be a fan of a certain vintage, for it was originally a TSN mic flash that Martinez held in his hand."

This recognition is well deserved.  I had forgotten that he actually started his Blue Jay broadcast career with TSN.  Love the triple bobblehead of Buck that will be given out to the first 15,000 fans on August 29th. The unique bobblehead shows his three eras with the Blue Jays.  Also shows off Bucks perfect hair!!

I remember Buck's first time on-air. He was still a player and given a mic to interview other players after a game - might have been after winning one of their World Series. You could tell by his voice he was very nervous. Obviously he got over any nerves.

His best play on the field? Lying at home plate with a broken leg after colliding with and tagging out Phil Bradley, then pegging third for an out but instead throwing the ball into left field, he caught the return throw from George Bell and tagged out the next runner coming home Gorman Thomas.
