More Cuts At Corus, Including AM640

You wouldn't think there was anyone left at Corus to let go and still keep things running. Despite that, another round of cuts has hit stations from the west coast to Toronto.

The AM640 cuts include producer Santiago Bedoya, a 3-year veteran who is frequently heard on air during several talk shows. Global BC and Global National also lost employees. According to a written statement:

“These changes are part of the difficult but necessary work to ensure our teams are structured in a sustainable way, while minimizing disruption to local news and audio delivery. We remain committed to supporting our news operations, and these changes do not reflect station closures or a retreat from our commitment to news."

Yes, and they forgot to add 'don't let the door hit you on the way out.' My sympathies to those who lost their jobs on Wednesday.

Sympathies as well to those that lost their roles.
If Corus Q4 numbers are off target, it’s safe to assume even more good people will lose jobs.

Who’s left at 640?

Santiago didn't deserve to lose his job. He's a good hard working technical producer. I hope he lands something quickly.

Santiago gets the boot, but the other guy who comes on to blather with Mulroney, sounding like an exaggerated version of The Simpson's 'Apu', gets to stay?

Re: More Cuts At Corus, Including AM640

One of my sources told me that they are really feeling the lack of staff at Corus. Most remaining staff have had their workloads increased and finding a broadcasting job elsewhere is slim pickings these days, so they stay until they can’t. I really feel for them as I worked for Corus on contract and really enjoyed it, sad to see their demise.

Walter - no need to get nasty. His name is Joyjeet and he is also a very talented young technical producer.

Re: More Cuts At Corus, Including AM640

This is peripheral to the Corus story, but I was surprised that an organization that prides itself on accuracy got this one wrong. The Canadian Press picked up the layoff story and as often happens, it was republished by subscribers across the country on their online sites.

The problem is in the headline and in the article. See if you can figure out the error.

Corus makes cuts at Global BC, Global National, News 640 and talk radio

What's wrong? The Corus Toronto station has never been known as "News 640." It's had a lot of monickers over the years, currently AM640, but considering they barely even have an actual newsroom anymore, this couldn't be more of an error. Even if they were to put out a correction now, it's unlikely it would fix the problem on most sites that have already published it.

I've seen it repeated in the Toronto Sun, CityNews and even the CBC. Only the Toronto Star's article, done by one of their reporters and not a Canadian Press reprint, got it correct.

I'm just surprised no one at CP caught it. They usually have pretty good standards over there.

No doubt, but he should stick to technical production.
