Michael Cera’s Rogers Spots

If you have watched any Blue Jays game this season, chances are you would have seen one of Michael Cera’s Rogers Xfinity spots. I am no fan of Rogers, as some of you may have noticed, but I find this series of spots to be funny and well acted by all, even the Blue Jays in the spots!

I particularly like the fact that there is closer lines by Cera’s under the final graphics, like “wi-fi just pouring out if that thing”, or “try keeping your head in the game”, all very well done, from the scripting to final production. But I still won’t sign up for Xfinity…..!

After the 300th or 400th airing - no longer funny.   The frequency of the airings during Sportsnet baseball and tennis games, underscores the dilemma of Canadian television-----so much unsold inventory.  Also coupled with the Bet365 "flight training" ad aka "perpendicular" - which I've seen about 1,000 times, you get the sense that there is a very limited number of companies who advertise on Canadian TV these days.   I was in Algonquin park this week.   I'd like to have Michael Sera sit on the dock and use his Rogers phone to have a phone call or email, let alone stream his blue jays.....Hey Edward, I have a great idea for new ads.....send Michael Cera up to Algonquin or have him drive in a car along Hwy 60 and try to talk to Kaz Okimoto's mom on a Rogers phone.  In the words of John Schneider, in one of the ads "not happening kid".

So true... there are no Rogers cell sites in Algonquin Park, just Bell. Plus there used to be a massive dead zone (a lack of any mobile service from any carrier) in the Addington Highlands north of Bon Echo Park and along Highway 28 between Bancroft and Denbigh, but according to Steven Nikkel's "Canadian Cellular Towers Map", it looks like a bunch of new Rogers sites have been built in that area, and I've seen some of the new towers, including two or three west of Renfrew on Highways 132 and 41. Downside is my wife & I are with Koodo, which largely relies on the Bell network outside of major centres that have native Telus cell sites, and Bell has been rather slow to fill in said dead zone along Highways 41 and 28.

Re: Michael Cera’s Rogers Spots

I wonder how the Jays players (and manager) feel about having to perform in stupid commercials for the company that owns them.

Re: Michael Cera’s Rogers Spots

These commercials are overplayed during the games.  At least they are an improvement to the "dancing family" from last year.  And they are a series of ads rather than just one or two.  I think most of the players likely enjoy doing commercials.  The personable members on the team are "hams" and in most cases probably have fun doing the ads.

Re: Michael Cera’s Rogers Spots

The Michael Cera adverts are a gazillion times better than the cringe worthy Mary Brown's Chicken "Romano" commercials that ran a few years ago !!

Would be a hoot if they added Fogell/McLovin to the Cera adverts: )) ..

You’re so right paterson1, they are overplayed and are indeed an improvement over the “dancing family” ads from last year. Those spots just did not work! I also agree with you that the players probably enjoy doing commercials, for their team owners and others, look at how many product spots Blue Jays players have been in, quite a handful over the years.

Reminds me of Slapshot where the owner made the players take part in a fashion show.

Also... poor Davis Schneider. He's down in Buffalo, again, while the ads featuring him are still running.

Maybe not for long.  After last night's fiasco, don't look for Jesus Sanchez to be blessing us with his presence much, going forward.

Here's the story behind the spot from an old (May 2026) Globe and Mail article.

Wow! I forgot about the Romano commercial, pretty cringeworthy! Thanks for posting g121, I hope to unsee it soon!

Re: Michael Cera’s Rogers Spots

As a Jays fan, I don't really mind the spots, in fact, I use the line 'Hi, Michael's Mom' every time Okamoto hits a homer.  Cera's mumbling does get annoying, though.  Those dark online gambling warning ads featuring Vlad the Imploder in a batting cage didn't seem to last long.  Wonder if it has anything to do with his ongoing failures at the plate?
