The man who kept the beat for ZZ Top has died. Frank Beard was in hospice care when he succumbed, although the cause of death hasn't been released.
While the group became a big success, Beard admitted the lifestyles of the rich and famous backfired on him.
“All the money I pissed off, that’s a regret,” he said. “I sold my original Ludwig kit to buy drugs with it. Relationships I fucked up … In the back of my mind, I knew I needed to kick heroin. I needed to stop doing cocaine. I had done it all, and I couldn’t go any further.”
Ironically, Beard was the only member of the hirsute band who didn't grow one.
He was 77.
Frank Beard, ZZ Top's Hard Shuffling Drummer Dies

So sad. I had just read that he was 'taking leave' from the band due to health concerns, so I was under the impression it wasn't too serious and that he'd be back after a while. Apparently not.
"Eliminator" was one of my favorite LPs growing up in the '80s. I played it so many times I practically ground it into a fine powder.

Sad news. ZZ Top ruled both the radio and music video airwaves back in the 80s with their hits. Their videos were well produced and usually quite humorous, remember the spinning guitars? That scene ended up in a lot of promos! I wasn’t aware Frank Beard was into drugs, rotten way to go. R.I.P. Mr. Beard.

His death was not street drug related. He stopped that 42 years ago.
