FCC Cancels Ownership Limits For TV Stations In US
Yesterday the FCC in the United States voted to end the ownership cap on individual TV owners. The limit had long been that no television owner could reach more than 39% of US households. I usually don’t like there being restrictions on broadcasters, but I do think this is a bad move. I also think Brendan Carr is another bad move!

When I read this yesterday, I was very unhappy. If radio is an example of what happens when you allow the same ownership to gobble up an endless number of stations, you wind up with cookie cutter formats, less local input, and inevitably fewer staff members. It’s happened at Audacy, Cumulus and all the other big names that have driven their endless properties into the ground.
This is almost certain to happen to TV stations as well, but in a different way regarding their biggest money maker: newsrooms. A judge has temporarily halted a Nexstar-Tegna merger but it may still happen. The former owns WIVB-TV, while the latter controls WGRZ in Buffalo.
When it was announced that the companies would become one, talk of layoffs instantly began in the Queen City and indeed, I believe some people were let go. It’s the bang-your-head-against-theirs competition that makes each of them better.
If they have the same owner, that incentive disappears and it becomes more about money than it does about scooping the other guy. (Although it’s already mostly about money.) It’s a disastrous decision and it may not happen. The FCC does not have the authority to change this rule and you can be sure there will be court challenges to stop this before it goes through.
This first came up here a year ago and we may be hearing about it for a long time to come.

This is not good for programming variety and subcarryer variety down there.
We nead more smaller owners, a radio example hear in canada: Evanove, They were the only ones brave inuf to try the following: a dance format, an all lgbtq community radio format with a mix of music for everyone, ethnic radio, christian radio, the jewel before it changed to a boring mainstream AC format.
Another radio example, Golden west broadcasting.
The big guys will swallow up all the tv channels owned by smaller companies and all that will be left are subcarryers with the same few programming formats: Retro tv, Crime, cortshows, westerns, and movies.

All good points, but, for example, if Sinclair buys more stations, the news, as has happened already, will be right leaning scripted and the same blah, blah on all their stations. Sinclair was also one of the groups that immediately pulled Kimmel when he-who-shall-not-be-named demanded it.

And that's what makes one or two companies owning so many stations frightening. The diversirty of voices and approaches will disappear, just like they did in radio when one or two giants own almost every station in town.

The better one inturms of news in my opinion is nextstar if I'm spelling that one correctly.
They also own my favourite news platform down there, news nation.

Broadcasting down in the states has gon to crap now that Dump is in power.
They nead a broadcaster or small media owner who's also bean in politics as president down there.
