Shuttered Calgary Radio Employees Gathered For Official Farewell

They never got to say their goodbyes to listeners - or each other. The former employees of two Calgary radio stations closed suddenly by Rogers three weeks ago got their chance for a final farewell to listeners and each other at a gathering in the Alberta city last Friday.

One of the now ex-employees recounts the emotional night for Broadcast Dialogue.

A farewell to Calgary’s 660 NewsRadio and Sportsnet 960 The Fan

Good on them for doing this. It must have been somewhat of a bittersweet gathering but I hope that it gave them some closure. I still think Rogers did the Calgary community a huge disservice and if I lived in Calgary, I’d drop any of Rogers’ services I might have had and tell them why. Weasels.

It's interesting to see Reddit threads actually lament the loss of 660 News. People (especially in Reddit's demographic) really used it as a utility in their daily lives, and found it a convenient source for local news.

Not only did Rogers pull the rug out of Calgarians in general by shutting down 660, but they also blindsided the Calgary Flames by scrapping their radio broadcasts entirely. Maybe if Corus can find enough change in the sofa cushions, they can get the Flames radio rights. CHED in Edmonton and CJOB in Winnipeg have their respective teams' rights, so there's no shortage of experience there.
