Barb DiGiulio & The College Of Sports Media

I've heard her before, but her appearance on CFRB on Thursday reminded me she's been off the airwaves for a long time. At one time, Barb DiGiulio was a staple on The Fan 590, where she worked for an amazing 22+ years.

After that, she wound up on CFRB doing its "Nightside" show, which is now called The Night Shift, and features Shane Hewitt in the air chair. She lasted there for six years and six months.

So where is she now? The erstwhile talk show master has combined what she does best into one career - she's now teaching at the College of Sports Media, which is located on Mowat Ave. in Toronto. She's been there for almost five years, preparing a new generation of broadcasters to work in front of or behind a microphone or a camera.

Unlike some of the other (rapidly disappearing) broadcasting schools, this one claims to offer state of the art facilities, including full radio studios, and "a professional (TV) studio with multiple sets, a control room, multiple edit suites, a full newsroom plus viewing and feedback area."

Sounds well equipped and some of its faculty, including DiGiulio, are more than qualified to give back, including former Fan 590 P.D. Nelson Millman and veteran Jim Van Horne.

Its two year course also offers a "required internship."

But like many of these places, I can't help but wonder -  it's great to get an intro to the industry, but really, how many openings are there in a rapidly shrinking business? I don't doubt they provide the basics, but do they also over promise the chance of actually getting a job in sports broadcasting? Their home page indicates at least 90% of their grads are working in the industry. Can that possibly be true? I guess it depends on how many students they have.

There are more opportunities in sports media than ever before.

I hope so for the college's sake.

I always enjoyed her on the Fan and 1010.
I hope she gets  back into a regular radio gig.

The Fan in its early days was great..............Jim Hunt,  Bob Mc Cown, Pat Marsden, and Mike Hogan were my favourites.   Gord Stellick, who I know still does some work for 590 was a great host.

As RadioActive mentioned, I have also noticed that Barb DiGiulio has been a guest on CFRB a few times of late, which impresses me as I don’t know if I’d guest on a station that got rid of me! I was actually surprised when she left as I thought she did a great job on Nightside. Good luck with the college, sounds like a decent facility.
