CBS Detroit Doesn't Know Who Doug Ford Or Mark Carney Is

I caught the 8:30 local newsbreak for CBS Detroit during the CBS Morning network program.  They ran a story about the new Gordie Howe bridge which will be open for traffic on Monday and that Pres. Trump is in Detroit on Monday.  Canada is not attending the ceremonial ribbon cutting this Friday because of new trade tariffs proposed by the US government.

They ran a clip of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer voicing her frustration with Washington regarding the changing tariff policy with Canada and how it's hurting Michigan.  This was followed by a clip of Doug Ford calling Pres. Trump a bully and how you need to stand up to a bully.  Problem was the graphic identified Ford as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.  Pretty sad.

For most of the American media Canada is an afterthought.

Quite true.  The new bridge opening and all of the politics with it is a big story in Michigan and has been for months. I wonder if the story ran with the wrong graphic all morning long.

However it was really odd when Bell changed formats a few years ago for a couple of the Windsor radio stations and Detroit media was all over it.  And when they brought back 89X in Windsor I was amazed how much interest came from Detroit media.

A guy I met in Florida thought Canada is a part of Alaska.

It's going to be interesting to see how the Detroit media covers the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge if it actually occurs on Monday July 27, 2026. Detroit has legacy channels 2,  4 and 7 that have relatively large news operations that make Toronto look small time. I will be watching.

It is pretty pathetic that the Gordie Howe Bridge, a symbol of what were once strong neighbours and allies, has been basically held ransom and only opening on Monday after another shakedown. Shameful.
