P.M. Apologizes For His Country's Media "Lying To You For Years"

This has nothing to do with Mark Carney or even Canada, but it's so unusual, I just wanted to note it here.

After years of virtual dictatorship in Hungary, they finally elected a new more liberal prime minister. He's now taking steps to reverse the harms of his predecessor, Viktor Orban, by not only shutting down what was once the propagandistic state broadcaster, but putting up this unprecedented graphic on screen:

"Public media cannot lie. We apologize for doing so for many years."

"
Prime Minister Péter Magyar also stated in a post on his social media account, "Today is a historic day. Propaganda broadcasts in public media have come to an end. They lied at night, they lied during the day, they lied on every frequency. This is over now." Magyar said that public media would be restructured to become independent and reliable."

As the country emerges from 16 years of virtual dictatorship and tight media control, that is a pretty remarkable admission.

The prime minister pulled the plug on state television: We have lied for years, we apologize.

The crackdown of the new regime on the corruption of the old one is certainly encouraging.

It's very likely that many 'influencers' on the Canadian right got significant funding from Hungary over the years - including some in local media.
