Voice Of "Peter Puck" & Gomer Pyle's Best Friend Dies At 94

His name was Ronnie Schell and if you watched TV in the 60s or tuned into Peter Puck, a cartoon that ran during NHL games, you'd remember him.

Schell never rose to the fame of some of the actors he appeared with on TV, but he gained notoriety as Jim Nabors' best army buddy Duke Slater in "Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C."

And he later voiced all the episodes of Peter Puck, designed to teach those who didn't really follow hockey the rules of the game.

A classic character actor, he even starred on one of the rare TV series about radio itself. It was called "Good Morning World" and he played the co-host of a morning show. It only lasted one season.

Schell had been called "America's Slowest Rising Comedian" because he never achieved the fame he might have deserved.

He was 94.

While it’s true Ronnie Schell was never a star, he was also proud to say that between acting, voiceovers and stand-up, he was never without work for more than a week in his 60+ years in show business.

I watched him once do a tribute to a famous L.A. comedy club and he told the audience that the club owner had invited him to take part in the gala and he told the owner that he was a big deal now and wanted $10,000 to show up and do a set. In his own words, “we talked it over and discussed all the good times we had in the past and I decided to be the bigger man and not let a mere $9,950 difference stand in the way of our friendship.”
