Return Of Famous Pirate Station Tinged With Irony

On Friday at 7 AM London time (or around 2 AM Toronto time) a legendary pioneer literally returns to the airwaves. By now most here know the story of Radio Caroline, probably the best known of the pirate radio stations that spread Top 40 to the British Isles when the BBC would barely play the music - and there was no real competition to the government service.

Half a century and a few movies about it later, Caroline got an actual licence and will return to the airwaves as a legal radio station over 'ome, on an AM frequency of 648 Khz. And yes. they're still on that boat.

The irony? That frequency used to belong to its most bitter enemy. 648 Khz was once a dial position used by the BBC.

If you're up late (or early as the case may be) and you're interested in listening to the official sign-on, you can hear it here.

Re: Return Of Famous Pirate Station Tinged With Irony

The real irony is, who the heck cares about AM radio in British anything.
What year was it when they first got DAB? 1993? 1994?
While Canada was still fighting with the States over which is the better way to go...DAB or HD Radio, The British had it all figured out.
Does anyone out that way even bother with AM for anything anymore?
Where is their DAB repeater?
At least they're smart enough to stream.
