CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

In addition to putting the now online-only signal of CJYE on HD, longtime St. Catharines yakker CKTB will join it.

The signal will be piggybacked on 102.9 FM, aka CKLH, The Legend. CJYE should appear there by June 1st.

CKTB joins it digitially on July 2nd.

I couldn't really care less about CJYE, but CKTB is a great addition to the HD dial, presuming it comes in here in the GTA, which it should. If not, it will remain on 610 as well.

And what of the other Whiteoaks station, CJMR, which also opted for online only? Its fate is expected to be revealed soon.

More here.

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

CKLH comes in great through much of the GTA, especially since they made upgrades last week. The HD will have less power than the analog signal, but it should be reliable in cars.

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

For me, signal strength where I am in Toronto seems about the same. Haven't detected the HD sidebands yet. CKLH HD will need to protect adjacent East FM in Scarborough and to a lesser extent, CFMX. With that, I can't see them being able to send much power towards the east. The HD signal may need to be fed to a separate, directional antenna.

I heard the HD signal at 3 this morning, with all three sources (CKLH, CKTB, CJYE) online.

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

Yes, it's there now. I heard the HD "hash" this morning over East FM. East no longer has a useable signal where I am. I tried CKLH on an HD table radio (Sangean HDR-18 with whip antenna) and it's marginal - it barely locks. I was able to see the 3 HD programmes on the display. HD2 has nothing and HD3 has JOY.

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

I'le go check if it comes in in scarborough, I'm sure the tamils will not be happy.
They already lost 88.9 hd3, and now with cklh in hd, they won't have a strong signal of east fm.
I think east fm neads to apply for ither 103.9 or even get 105.9 and have the region move to 91.5.

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

The issue will be more in west Scarborough. There is a sizable Tamil community in Wexford. I took a drive there last night and the East FM signal is now distorted in some spots. East has a very directional antenna pattern, nulled towards CKLH and that's working against them even more now with CKLH going HD. East has a great signal in Oshawa, though!

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

A station should have to go threw an Industry Canada check before being allowed to use HD radio. Its terrible how HD radio interferes with upper and lower adjacent frequencies and can take out 2 analog frequencies..

102.9 seems a bit spotty here in Waterloo Region. Did they make a technical adjustment with the new Transmitter?

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

Well, I'll give them credit for one thing - despite being relegated to online and HD only, Whiteoaks is expanding programming on the former CJYE, including a longer morning show.

They say the conversion away from AM has only helped the station.

"Over the last fiscal quarter, JOY Radio’s streaming hours increased by nearly 20 per cent, as more listeners continue to spend time with the station through digital platforms."

JOY Radio refreshes lineup as it expands onto FM-HD

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

Eastern North York (Don Mills) CKLH all 3 HD's first time just now but not stable.
(CING 95.3 is HD is consistent, but power is higher
CHKX 94.7 HD's are sometimes yes and sometimes no)
CIDC 103.5 HD  is always there).
Sangean HDR 16 portable.

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

Sounds like you are in my backyard... My reception is same for the other stations with just the whip antenna. CIDC has a lot of multipath, so having HD actually cleans it up, though the HD wipes out WEDG. I was back in Wexford tonight but this time, south of Lawrence Ave at Warden. The East FM signal was unusable in that area. Will be interesting to see if East applies to the CRTC to adjust their antenna pattern.

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

I've been forgetting to check out the HD signals on CKLH, until I finally was in my car the other day and tried to tune in the newcomer(s).

Don't know why, but there's no sign of any piggbacked HD signal on that frequency. The original FM comes in strong and well but the radio, which is pretty sensitive, shows no HD signals there at all. And I'm only in upper North York.

Is it just me? Are those signals there for everyone else? If so, I wonder why they're invisible to me. If I can get strong reception on the main channel, you'd figure the HD would be there, too. I'm disappointed to say the least, because I was looking forward to hearing CKTB's debut there in early July.

Oh well. At least 610 is loud and clear.

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

The HD signals run at significantly lower power than the analog ones. CKLH's HD is spotty for me downtown. I though it would be better as I get the analog like a local.

But looking at the coverage map I can see now why not. Wouldn't expect the HD to be reliable outside of the red band.

Re: CKTB Heading To HD From Hamilton's CKLH

Oddly, this is running on the 610CKTB website.

2025? That must be a misprint. And I'm not sure about that June 17th date.
