I'm not a huge Leafs or hockey fan, but it was impossible not to notice the press conference welcoming John Chayka as the new team G.M. Normally, I wouldn't care much, but every story I've heard on both radio and TV notes he comes with a lot of baggage and seems to be a controversial hire.
There are endless reports that he was suspended from the league for what he did when he was with Arizona. OK. But the report stops there. What, exactly, did he do to get him tossed from NHL? Not one report I've watched or listened to has told me exactly what his sin was and why it was so serious.
You'd think this wouid be an absolute necessity in this story. Yet it's constantly skipped over, as if it doesn't matter.
If, say, John Moore was arrested for a crime, convicted and fired from CFRB and they never said why, I'm pretty sure people would want to know the reason. Why is this guy any different? And why don't they explain what he did, instead of just assuming everyone knows?

did you spend 10 seconds to Google?
AI Overview
In January 2021, the NHL suspended former Arizona Coyotes GM John Chayka for the remainder of the calendar year due to "conduct detrimental to the league and game". The suspension stemmed from a breakdown in his relationship with the Coyotes, where he breached his contract by pursuing other opportunities, and for illegal, private scouting combine testing of draft prospects.

The Mats Sundin signing is also very strange. He has no hockey executive experience from what I can tell.

Yes, of course I looked on the web. My point is that none of the broadcast sources bothered to explain it. Not one.
You might think such a terrible allegation is an important fact to explain to viewers and listeners. A complete report shouldn't be forcing me to Google, but all of theirs did.

Glad to hear someone did it right.
I certainly didn't see it on CTV or Global's versions, and they never explained it at all on 680 News, AM640 or CFRB. Again, I can only report on the ones I heard - which involved a large number of them, because the story was repeated frequently on all of them.

TSN did explain why Chayka was suspended, and also some print media. I am sure sports talk radio (even Rogers owned 590) had something on this. However the real story was with the press conference and Toronto Sun sports writer Steve Simmons grilling MLSE Pres. and CEO Keith Pelly on Chayka's hiring. Everyone covered this...Toronto Sun’s Steve Simmons posits damning questions to Maple Leafs CEO over John Chayka hiring - Yahoo Sports
