He worked for Hockey Night In Canada and was best known as an analyst for the Vancouver Canucks. John Garrett was also a former NHL goalie, so he knew what he was talking about when it came to explaining a game.
Sportsnet announced on Tuesday that the veteran broadcaster passed away. No word on the cause of death, but it appears to have come suddenly. League Commissioner Gary Bettman notes he'd just visited him in Utah last Friday, where he helped call the first ever NHL playoff game in that state.
He spent 13 years in the league before his retirement on the ice led him to a 40 year career in the booth.
He was 74.

John Garrett was also on the broadcast team this year for the Vegas-Utah playoff series on Sportsnet, which was also airing on CBC. Last night’s broadcast was cancelled, with CBC TV having to show alternate programming and The National live across the network; SN itself simulcasted ESPN’s broadcast of the game.

John grew up in Trenton Ontario, as did I. My dad coached him during his minor hockey days. RIP to both.
