Networks Scramble As Shots Fired At White House Correspondents Dinner

It was already going to be an odd night. But with a large number of U.S. government officials - including Trump - scheduled to be in attendance, along with hundreds of reporters, the White House Correspondents Dinner descended into chaos, after shots were fired at the event.

All the major cable networks, which were covering the yearly gathering, sprang into action and ironically, there was no shortage of news people around to provide coverage. But none of them expected to be on the job Saturday night!

Oddly, the major over-the-air networks did not interrupt their own programming - mostly reruns and an NBA playoff game - to provide wall-to-wall coverage. [Edit: They did take the press conference live, even interrupting the NBA playoffs on ABC, which I'm sure did not make fans of the teams involved very happy.]

It's not immediately clear who the shooter was aiming at.

John Miller from CNN has the best contacts in the business.

As someone on social media has noted, "The amount of misinformation we’re getting about an incident that just occurred in front of 1,500 news reporters is truly the metaphor of our generation."

I was surprised that Trump was attending the WHCD for the first time that I was actually watching, yeah, slow Saturday night for me! Well things certainly perked up! This is the third attempt in less than two years, I’d be concerned.

CNN certainly rose to the occasion last night amid all of the chaos.  Wolf Blitzer was the man.  Up until Wolf's report, most thought the hub bub was caused by dishes crashing near the ballroom.  Wolf had gone to the men's room and when he returned heard gunfire and actually was only feet away from the gunman. When he was recounting all of this live last night on his cell, he was composed, calm but didn't mind admitting he was scared after being tackled and protected by secret service.

I'm concerned but perhaps in a different way than you are.
