The crowd at a hockey game doesn't generally give a standing ovation to the guy calling the game. But they did Monday night at ScotiaBank Arena. And so did the players.
It was Joe Bowen's final night in the home gondola, as he retires after four decades of calling the Leaf games and becoming the de facto radio voice of the team.
"After 44 years of calling Maple Leafs games, Bowen announced earlier this season that this would be his final one behind the mic. As such, the 75-year-old was honored with a scoreboard tribute during a stoppage early in the third period, eliciting a standing ovation that lasted over two minutes.
Cue the weeping."
Bowen still has one more game to call before the last minute of play comes for real. It airs Wednesday on TSN1050 vs. the Senators in Ottawa.
Sportsnet has video of the standing O and aired a moving tribute filled with highlights of his career on Monday's broadcast. You can hear it by scrolling down a bit on their home page.

Apparently they are. I heard this morning that he is going to the Nation's Capital to call his last game. Ironically, he's said that not being able to attend away games is one of the reasons he decided to retire.

Very good news. It's the very least they could do, from an organization that specializes in doing the very least.

What are the odds that another veteran hockey announcer with more than 40 years experience is also retiring on Wednesday? As Joe Bowen calls the final game of his career with the Leafs in Ottawa, fans in Detroit and Windsor will say farewell to Paul Woods, the team's long time radio analyst.
Woods is now 71, has been with the Red Wings since 1985 and has commented on thousands of games. But this next one will be his last. He even played for a time in the NHL and has been around for one thing Bowen never got to see.
“It’s just a gift to be able to say I saw the Red Wings win those Cups,” he said. “For the former players, we take great pride in that, too. We didn’t do it, but we were part of that organization. It means a lot to us."

If they're lucky, no.
