640 Host Complains His Theme Songs Have To Be Registered With SOCAN

SOCAN is an organization that collects licence fees to protect the rights of musicians and composers in Canada, to ensure everyone gets the compensation they're entitled to for the use of their songs.

But what happens when you compose your own music and use A.I. to bring it to life? Turns out, SOCAN (The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) wants a piece of that, too. Which brings us to AM640's Brad Smith, who wrote at least six of his own intros and employed Artificial Intelligence to bring them to life. He's had to stop using them because the Society says they have to be registered before he can put them on the air.

Even though they're already his and he's given his permisson to use his own self-composed songs exclusively on his own show. He told listeners on Tuesday if they were worndering what happened to all of them in recent weeks, he's waiting for SOCAN to approve them being played on the air.

I understand what the rights group does, but this case doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The composer (Smith) has given permission to use them on his show and there are no "musicians" involved, per se, because the voices and the notes are all computer generated.  So it would seem the organization would not have a say in their being broadcast.

Despite that, he's now waiting for the paperwork to go through and promises listeners those unique themes will be returning as soon as it's done. Until then, he's playing other recordings at the beginning and end of each segment - all of which are covered by SOCAN.
